Season 9 Match Day 18 (Fri Jun 25)
Simon Hutchinson's Red Star became the second team to have finished all of their league games in Season 9. They finished with three wins out of four games beating Kevin Nieman's Inventus and Jason Mitchell's Valley Irons in back-to-back games. Their only defeat was in a closely fought game against Wayne Smith's Left Hannover the Table 96.
|
The nine points won by the Reds move them into second place, behind the champions, Wayner Bremen, who beat the Hollywood Hammers and Valley Irons. Simi City, who did not play today, are now in third place with five points less and with six game in hand over the Reds. The other contender for the runners up spot, Left Hannover the Table 96, won twice defeating the Reds and Inter Nieman, and are now six points behind second place with five games left to play.
Kumba, the only other team to have played all of their games, remain in fifth place as the Hollywood Hammers, who are a point behind them, were beaten by Wayner. The Hammers have one game left, against Left Hannover, which they have to win to move above Kumba, a draw would mean they would have the same number of points as Kumba. The favorite for fifth place must be Inventus. They have the same number of points as the Hammers, and have four games left.
There is no change at the bottom of the league as both Inter and the Irons lost the games they played. The race for the Wooden Spoon is not over as the Irons are three points behind Inter and with two games in hand. As they have to play each other twice before the end of the season the Irons could still win enough points to avoid winning the Wooden Spoon.

Season 9 Match Day 17 (Fri Jun 18)
Wayne Smith's Wayner Bremen won their four games, defeating the Valley Irons twice, Red Star, and Inter Nieman. These games increase the Wayners' winning streak to 18 games. The twelve points won are enough to give them the Season 9 championship, with four games left to play. This season's championship is Wayne's fifth consecutive league title.
Champions: Wayner Bremen |
While the race for first place is over, the race for second is not. Simon Hutchinson's Simi City and Red Star both won their two games. Simi City, currently in second place, are four points clear of third place Red Star, and have seven points more than Wayne's Left Hannover the Table 96 in fourth. The Reds have played two more games than Simi and the Lefties have played one game less.
Dominic Hutchinson's Kumba is in fifth place and have played all of their games. Jason Mitchell's Hollywood Hammers missed two opportunities to claim fifth place for themselves, losing to Simi City and Kevin Nieman's Inventus. Inventus are also in the hunt for fifth, being four points behind Kumba and with six games remaining.
At the bottom of the table Kevin's Inter Nieman and Jason's Valley Irons did not win any points. Inter lost to Simi City and Wayner Bremen, and the Irons lost to the Wayners twice and Red Star. The Irons are in last place, but they are only three points behind Inter with five games in hand.

Season 9 Match Day 16 (Fri Jun 11)
Tonight Wayne Smith's Wayner Bremen was rampant. All four of their games finished as mercy rule victories, defeating Kevin Nieman's Inter Nieman twice and Simon Hutchinson's Red Star and Simi City.
|
The points won from these games now put the Wayners in an almost unassailable position at the top of the table. They only need to win six points from their remaining eight games to be crowned Season 9 champions.
In the only other league game of the night Red Star defeated Inter Nieman.
Wayner Bremen are 18 points clear at the top of the table. Second place Simi City have a one point lead over equal third place Left Hannover the Table 96 and Red Star, who have played one and two more games. Kumba, who finished their fixtures last week, are in fifth. But Hollywood Hammers or Inventus could claim fifth before the end of the season. The Hammers are a point behind with four games left to play, and Inventus are seven points behind with seven games remaining. There is then a ten point gap to the bottom two teams. Inter Nieman and Valley Irons are battling it out not to win this season's Wooden Spoon. While Inter have three more points than the Irons, they have played six more games.
There was also the first Supplemental, non league or cup game, of the season as Red Star took on Dominic Hutchinson's new team, Kumba "11", in a friendly game.

Blackpool use Subbuteo as tactical aid (Tue Jun 8)
The following story was published by the British newspaper the Daily Star, on Sunday June 6, about Blackpool FC's manager Ian Holloway desire for his players to play Subbuteo.
Barmy soccer boss Ian Holloway has ordered his promoted Blackpool stars to start learning Subbuteo.
The Premier League’s shock new manager is a huge fan of the classic tabletop football game.
And he believes it could prove his secret tactical weapon in his battle for survival in the big time next season.
Off-the-wall Holloway, 47, wants his players to learn the game on their summer holidays.
Then they can play each other to experience what it’s like to operate in different positions and see ways of getting the ball forward to the attackers.
A source at the club said: "Ollie is a passionate believer in trying new ideas and his achievements in getting the club into the Premier League prove he's no laughing stock.
"He's adamant that playing Subbuteo can give his players an insight into the game that they may not otherwise appreciate.
"Apart from anything else, there is a fun and competitive element to playing the game and it's something he's told the lads he wants them to have a look at during the summer break."
It's not the first time the former Plymouth, Leicester City, Bristol Rovers and QPR boss has brought his wacky theories into training sessions.
He once stunned his players when he replaced the tactics board with 22 teddies he bought from a pub to demonstrate formations.
Each cuddly toy bear had a player’s name on and that’s how they knew if they were selected for the next match.
Subbuteo sets featuring flat cardboard players on weighted bases first hit shelves in 1947, being replaced by plastic figures in 1961 and lightweight versions in 1980.

Season 9 Match Day 15 (Fri Jun 4)
Dominic Hutchinson became the first player to complete all of his games. The other players are playing two teams and they have 17-19 games left.
|
Dominic's season ended with disappointment as he lost his last games, both by a single goal. The first was Hutchinson derby against his father's team Simi City. The second was Kevin Nieman's Inter Nieman's first win of the season.
Simon Hutchinson's Simi City was the "team of the night", winning all three of their games. The first was the victory over Kumba, the second a mercy rule win against Jason Mitchell's Valley Irons, and the third was a two goal win over Wayne Smith's Left Hannover the Table 96.
Lefties had what for Wayne was a frustrating night. They tied their first two games, with Jason's Hollywood Hammers and fought out a goalless game with Kevin's Inter, before losing to City.
The dourest game of the night was the goalless tie between Inter and Irons. The players described the game in just 15 words.
Despite not playing Wayner Bremen remain in first place. Simi City's wins move them into second place, with a point more than Left Hannover, and with two games in hand. The Lefties, third, are three points ahead of fourth place Red Star, who have a game in hand. Kumba remain in fifth, and the Hollywood Hammers are just a point behind and with four games in hand. Inventus, seventh, are six points behind the Hammers, with three games in hand. Inter Nieman's first win of the season move them off the bottom of the table, they have three more points than bottom club Valley Irons, who have three games in hand.
