Season 9 Match Day 14 (Fri May 28)
If there was an award for "Player of the Night" then it would have been won by Jason Mitchell. His Hollywood Hammers, won one game, defeating Inventus, tied with second place Left Hannover the Table 96 and third place Red Star, and gave top team Wayner Bremen a "tough" game.
|
It was also the highest scoring night of the season, with 30 goals scored in eight games.
The evening did not start well for Jason's Hammers. In their first game of the night they were two goals down by the middle of the first half, against Simon Hutchinson's Red Star. By the end of the first half the Hammers had pulled a goal back, and they tied the game early in the second half. In the other game Dominic Hutchinson's Kumba shocked Wayne Smith's first place Wayner Bremen, by taking the lead. Wayner equalized before the end of the first half, and scored the winner in the second. The Hammers came out on top in a five goal thriller against Kevin Nieman's Inventus, scoring the winning goal with seven seconds left. Meanwhile Red Star struggled, due to humidity causing their figures' bases becoming very "sticky", and lost by two goals to Wayner Bremen. Kevin's Inter Nieman's miserable season continued as they were defeated by Kumba. Inter are the only team who has not won a game this season. The Hammers came back twice to tie with Wayne's Left Hannover. Red Star inflicted a mercy rule defeat upon the hapless Inter Nieman. And in the Hammers final game caused Wayner's coach to say "I was scrambling to keep my slim lead".
There is no change in the order of the top five teams. Wayner now have a nine point lead over second place Left Hannover. Red Star are a point behind the Lefties, but have played two more games. Simi City are in fourth five points behind the Reds and with four games in hand. Fifth place Kumba are five points behind City, and only have two games left to play. Hammers' good results move them back into sixth place, five points behind Kumba and two more than Inventus. Inventus have two games in hand. The bottom two, Valley Irons and Inter Nieman are 14 and 15 points adrift of seventh place, and now those teams have just the honor of not winning the Wooden Spoon to play for.

Big Turnout in Laguna Niguel (Mon May 24)
Southern California Subbuteo Club's John Carroll did not join the other members of the club for the Subbuteo Across America day in Simi Valley. John is a Youth Coach with the Laguna Niguel Soccer Club, and May 22 coincided with the LNSC's Spring Camp and Goalie training day.
So he took his "Indoor" board to the fields to show the youngsters the game of Subbuteo, and eleven of the youngsters took turns to play.
"We played nine games," John told us after the event, "some were two-on-two. And the rules were extremely liberal".
The eleven players' names have been added to the Subbuteo Across America's Roll of Honor, and some photographs of them playing have been added to the slide show here»

Season 9 Match Day 13 (Sat May 22)
Two Season 9 games were played during Subbuteo Across America. Match Day 13 was lucky for Kevin Nieman's Inventus.
|
The first game Inventus was "away" to Wayne Smith's Left Hannover the Table 96. While Wayne described the goalless tie as "disappointing", Kevin was "happy for the point".
Inventus did a lot better in the second game, "home" against Simon Hutchinson's Red Star. By half time Inventus had a two goal lead, and they rode out the Reds' pressure in the second half to win the game 2-1.
These results see no change in the order of the teams at the top of the table. Wayne's Wayner Bremen are still in first place, with a point more than the Left Hannover and with four games in hand. Red Star remain in third, now four points behind the Lefties. The only change was that Inventus move back into sixth place, with three points more than Jason Mitchell's Hollywood Hammers, and they are now four points behind Dominic Hutchinson's Kumba with five games in hand.
Season 9 Match Day 12 (Fri May 21)
Tonight was the night we played the most games this season, nine. It saw the Valley Irons win their first game of the season, and move off the foot of the table. Inter Nieman's winless streak continue, and they fall to last place. Wayner Bremen return to first place. And Kumba became the first team to drop out of the race for the championship.
|
The evening opened with the fastest mercy rule win this season, as Wayne Smith's Wayner Bremen scored four goals against Dominic Hutchinson's Kumba. At the same time Simon Hutchinson's Red Star pipped Jason Mitchell's Hollywood Hammers by a single goal in the first of their two matches. Kevin Nieman's Inter Nieman won only their eighth point, in the second round of games, against a poor Kumba. While Wayner Bremen beat the Hammers both players commented that the game was a lot closer than the result, as Jason played what he described as his best game against Wayne. The third round of games was memorable for including Jason's Valley Irons' first win of the season. Last week Kumba mercy ruled them, but today the Irons won with a early goal. Despite describing it as a "really tough match" Wayne's Left Hannover the Table 96 achieved revenge for last week's loss to Simon by beating Red Star by a single goal. Inter's misery continued as they were beaten 0-3 by the Hammers in their last game of the night. The ninth game was very one sided, as Red Star dominated their game against the Hammers. The Reds' offense hit the goalpost and cross bar numerous times, and the Hammers' large metal keeper made many saves to deny the Reds a goal. At the end of the game Simon admitted he was very frustrated not to have scored, and Jason was glad that he had defended well enough to earn a point.
Wayner Bremen return to the top of the table with a two point lead and having played three less games then the team they moved above, Left Hannover. The Lefties have a three point lead over Red Star, who in turn have a two point lead over Simi City, all of these teams have played the same number of games. Kumba remain in fifth place, eight points behind City, and become the first team to drop out of the championship race. They can only win a maximum of 39 points, which is two less than Wayner have. Hollywood Hammers move up to sixth, with seven points less than Kumba and with six games in hand. Inventus drop one place to seventh, a point behind the Hammers and with a game in hand. Valley Irons' first win move them above Inter Nieman, the teams are separated by a point, and the Irons are ten points behind Inventus with six games in hand.
Season 9 Match Day 11 photos (Tue May 18)
Only a handful of photographs were taken during last Friday's Season 9 Match Day 11, all of them during the two games between Wayne Smith's Left Hannover the Table 96 and Jason Mitchell's Valley Irons. The pick of them has been added to the Season 9 slide show, which you can view here»

Season 9 Match Day 11 (Fri May 14)
It was an exciting night of Subbuteo as a new team moved to the top of the league table, Left Hannover the Table 96 lost their first game of the season, and Valley Irons winless streak continued.
|
The first round of games saw a Hutchinson derby win for Simon's Simi City over Dominic's Kumba, and an "away" win for Wayne Smith's Left Hannover over Jason Mitchell's Valley Irons. The Irons woes continued going down three goals against City in the second round of games. Kumba managed to stop the Lefties from scoring until midway through the second half, and then held on to only lose by that one goal. After two losses Kumba won by the biggest margin of the night inflicting a "mercy rule" victory over the Irons. In the other game the Lefties lost their first game of the season, to City. The last game of the night was the reverse of the first round game between the Irons and the Lefties. Jason seemed to be getting the hang of the Iron's bases making all kinds of flicks to frustrate Wayne. The Lefties took the lead in the first half, and the Irons equalized in less than minute. After enjoying a period of pressure the Irons were caught on the break at the end of the first half, and the Lefties scored their second and winning goal.
Left Hannover move into first place, with Simi City and Wayner Bremen sharing second place just a point behind the Lefties. City have played one more game than the Lefties and five more than Wayner. Red Star dropped from second to fourth. Kumba's win move them to within three points of the Reds, and widens the gap between them, in fifth, and Kevin Nieman's Inventus to seven points. The bottom four remain unchanged, the Hollywood Hammers are three points behind Inventus. Inter Nieman are nine points behind the Hammers. And the Valley Irons remain at the foot of the table, with a point less than Inter.
Season 9 Match Day 10 photos (Thu May 13)
There was an even number of players at last Friday's Season 9 Match Day 10, and as most people prefer to play Subbuteo than take photographs there were only a few photographs taken and added to the Season 9 slide show. You can view the slide show here»

Season 9 Match Day 10 (Fri May 7)
This week none of the games were "run away" victories. The largest winning margin was a two goal "home" win. The rest of the wins were only by one goal, and there were two draws.
|
The evening opened with Kevin Nieman's Inventus beating Dominic Hutchinson's Kumba in a game the victor said he was fortunate win. Inventus were not so lucky in their next game, losing to Simon Hutchinson's Red Star. Despite going down in the biggest defeat of the night, to Left Hannover the Table 96, Kumba were complimented by Wayne Smith for how they played. The last round of games ended as ties as Inventus and Left Hannover played out a goalless draw, and a late mistake by Simon's Simi City allowed Kumba to equalize.
Second place Red Star's victory allowed them to close the gap to first place Wayner Bremen to six points. Left Hannover moved up one place into third, two points behind the Reds and with a game in hand. Simi City dropped one place to fourth, one point behind third place but they have played two more games. Kumba remain in fifth, three points behind City and six points behind the second place Reds. As Jason Mitchell was not present Inventus moved above Jason's Hollywood Hammers into sixth place, they are now four points behind Kumba with a game in hand and three points ahead of the Hammers. The bottom two clubs, Inter Nieman and Valley Irons, remain unchanged, with Inter nine points behind the Hammers, but they have played a lot less games than all the other clubs.

League Cup semi finals (Sun May 2)
The draw for the Southern California Subbuteo Club's Season 9 League Cup is complicated as the four teams are played by two players. Wayne Smith plays Wayner Bremen and Left Hannover the Table 96, and Simon Hutchinson plays Simi City and Red Star.
Season 9 Rule 7.5 states:
7.5 A player's "A" and "B" cannot be drawn together in the League Cup, with the exception of the final.
![]()
Therefore, the semi finals will pair each player's "A" team with the others "B" team, thus:
| Simi City | v | Left Hannover Table 96 |
| Wayner Bremen | v | Red Star |
As with all other cup ties which team is the "home" team in each tie will be determined by rule 6.2.
