Simi City V Wayner Bremen

Season 9 Match Day 9 (Fri Apr 30)

In the League Cup the last two places in the semi finals went to Wayne Smith's Wayner Bremen and Simon Hutchinson's Simi City, with victories over Kevin Nieman's Inventus and Dominic Hutchinson's Kumba.  They join Left Hannover the Table 96 and Red Star in the semi final draw, which will be performed on Sunday.

Pos   Player Pl Pts
1 Wayner Bremen 15 35
2 Red Star 15 26
3 Simi City 16 25
4 Left Hannover 13 23
5 Kumba 19 22
6 H Hammers 18 16
7 Inventus 18 15
8 Inter Nieman 12 7
9 Valley Irons 10 6

As the cup ties were being played Jason Mitchell's Hollywood Hammers fought out a goalless draw with Kevin's Inter Nieman, and then lost to a late goal against Simi City.  Jason's night finished with another tie, as his Valley Irons were denied their first win of the season by a late equalizer by Kumba.

Wayner Bremen were stunned by an early goal from Simi City, but goals either side of half time ensured that the Wayners remain unbeaten.

Inventus return to form was evident in the last game of the night against Simon's Red Star.  It was a closely fought game that seemed to be set to finish goalless, when a critical goalkeeping error allowed the Reds to score the only goal of the game.

Wayner Bremen remain in first place in the league table, with eleven points more than the team in second place.  Red Star and Simi City moved above Left Hannover, who did not play tonight, into second and third places.  Kumba remain in fifth, with a point less than the Lefties, but they have played six more games.  In the race for second place, second place Red Star and fifth place Kumba are separated by only four points.

The gap between fifth place and Hollywood Hammers in sixth remains unchanged at six points, and Inventus remain a point behind the Hammers in seventh.  The gap between Inventus and Inter Nieman, in eighth, narrowed by a point to eight points.  And the Valley Irons remain at the foot of the table with a point less than Inter.

Subbuteo goalkeepers

Official FISTF goalkeeper (Mon Apr 26)

On April 12 FISTF announced in Circular 15 that as of January 1, 2011 there would be "only one goalkeeper for everyone".  The full announcement is below:

<<

  Dear Presidents & Friends

We cannot hide that our efforts as from January 2010, when this Provisional Board was elected were a bit biased on the goalkeeper issues. This board, was all ears to hear a number of suggestions, any ideas and all the possible dilemmas about this argument.

We are happy that this board involved a consultation process before arriving to any decisions. Each one of us heard his mates, some players and even some officials regarding the issue. Now we can say that this board, together with all those involved reached a decision! As from 1st January 2011 there will be only one goalkeeper for everyone.

Now we are in the process to publish the design and by consultation again we arrive to the production of this milestone decision, which gives the opportunity to everyone to share the same equipment and finally stop the issue about the Goalkeeper.

I would like to end, by informing you that more decisions will be published soon! We will be informing you about these in the following days!

Truly in Sports
>> Silvio Catania FISTF President

Simon reaches 600 games (Mon Apr 19)

The first game of Saturday's American Subbuteo Association Open was Simon Hutchinson's 600th game with the Southern California Subbuteo Club.  He becomes only the second player to reach this milestone.

Simon had played Subbuteo in his youth in England, and returned to playing in 2005 with the SCSC.

"It is hard to believe I have played 600 games in five years," he told us.  "I would never have thought that a game of Subbuteo on an office desk would have led to all of this.  It has been a blast and I am looking forward to trying to reach 700 before the end of the year."

Participants in the ASA Open in April 2010

Small turn out but close Open (Sat Apr 17)

Only four players took part in today's American Subbuteo Association Open.  Even though there were so few players there were some cracking games.

In the group stage Wayne Smith started with a tough game with David Jensen, and had to come from a goal down to tie with Simon Hutchinson.  Simon had a struggle to beat his son, Dominic, who took an early lead in their game.

The semi finals went as predicted, and produced the same scores.  In the final Wayne found the form that had deserted him earlier, to claim his 16th consecutive ASA Open.

In the third place game neither David nor Dominic could score in 40 minutes of play, 30 minutes of regulation time and 10 minutes of over time.  The score was level after the first five shots of the shoot out, then David saved Dominic's sixth shot and scored his.

For all the scores and a full report go to the ASA Open April 2010 page»

We would like to thank the folks at FISTF for correcting the details for the Satellite of California (Western States Open).  In their original file on their web site they had the third place game as the final.  The amended sheet now correctly lists Wayne Smith and David Jensen as the finalists.

Wayner Bremen v Inventus

Season 9 Match Day 8 (Fri Apr 9)

Wayne Smith's Wayner Bremen continue their march to the league championship winning their three games tonight.  The first was a "home" win over Simon Hutchinson's Simi City.  The second a mercy rule win over Dominic Hutchinson's Kumba, who played an attacking game and was rewarded with a goal.  The third was an uninspiring victory over Kevin Nieman's Inventus.

Pos   Player Pl Pts
1 Wayner Bremen 14 32
2= Left Hannover 13 23
2= Red Star 14 23
4 Simi City 14 22
5 Kumba 18 21
6= H Hammers 16 15
6= Inventus 17 15
8 Inter Nieman 11 6
9 Valley Irons 9 5

Jason Mitchell's Valley Irons had a wretched night, losing the three games they played.  First they lost to Kumba at "home", then to Inventus "on the road", before being crushed at "home" by Simi City.  When Jason switched to his "A" team, Hollywood Hammers, he fared only slightly better, playing out a tie with Kevin's "B" team, Inter Nieman.

The only other game of the night was a single goal victory for Simon's Red Star over Kumba.

Wayner Bremen now have a nine point lead over Left Hannover the Table 96, Wayne's "B" team.  The Reds' victory puts them in equal second place with the Lefties, although the Lefties have a game in hand.  Simi City are just a point behind in fourth place, and Kumba just a point behind City in fifth.  This means that second and fifth places are separated by only two points.

Hollywood Hammers and Inventus share sixth place, six points behind Kumba.  Perhaps the Hammers are better off as they have played one less game.  Inter Nieman climbed away from sharing last place, they have one more point than Valley Irons, who have two games in hand.  The gap between Inter and the teams above them has increased to nine points.

ASA Rolling Rankings (Tue Apr 6)

The American Subbuteo Association published the latest Rolling Rankings, which the Southern California Subbuteo Club will be using for the ASA Open in 11 days time.

The difference between last month's and this month's rankings is that the SCSC's players have all risen in the rankings by one or two places, except for Wayne Smith who remains in 24th place.  You can see last month's rankings here»

The current rankings of the SCSC's players are:

Rank Name No. of

So Cal players in world rankings (Mon Apr 5)

Following last month's Satellite of California (Western Sates Open) tournament the Southern California Subbuteo Club's players who took part are included in FISTF's world rankings for March 2010.

579 Wayne Smith   1050 Dominic Hutchinson
632 David Jensen   1050 Sean Daly
866 John Carroll   1050 Kevin Nieman

As Dominic, Sean, and Kevin all have the same ranking indicates that FISTF does not give points to the winners of the Consolation (Mary Jane) competition.

You can understand why the international players who played against the SCSC last year were such formidable opponents when you see where they are in the rankings.

Season 9

Season 9 Match Day 7 (Fri Apr 2)

After stating last week that Kevin Nieman had not won a game this season his winless streak game came to an end this week in his 17th game of the season.  It was the only win of the night, the other games ended in ties.

Pos   Player Pl Pts
1= Left Hannover 13 23
1= Wayner Bremen 11 23
3 Red Star 13 20
4 Simi City 12 19
5 Kumba 15 18
6 H Hammers 15 14
7 Inventus 15 12
8= Inter Nieman 10 5
8= Valley Irons 6 5

Kevin's Inventus' win was a victory on the "road" at Dominic Hutchinson's Kumba.  He went on to play out an exciting 2-2 tie with Wayne Smith's Left Hannover the Table 96, and tense goalless game with Simon Hutchinson's Simi City.

The only other game of the night was a 1-1 tie between Left Hannover the Table 96 and Simi City, Simon equalizing with less than a minute left in the game.

The two points Left Hannover won puts them in equal first place with Wayne's other team Wayner Bremen, the Lefties have played two more games.  Simi City's two draws move them up one place to fourth, within a point of Simon's other team, Red Star.  Dominic's Kumba dropped a place to fifth, one point behind City and with four points more than Jason Mitchell's Hollywood Hammers.  Even though they remain in seventh place the five points Inventus won tonight puts them just two points behind the Hammers.  Kevin's Inter Nieman and Jason's Valley Irons still languish as the foot of the table, seven points behind Inventus.
