Flick-Talk blog on Subbuteo across America (Tue Mar 30)

In his latest post on his blog, Flick-Talk, Kevin Nieman discusses what "Subbuteo across America" is and why you should take part.

That's why "Subbuteo Across America" is so brilliant. It's not intended to reach millions of people. It's not intended to attract big stars, make a huge splash, or to earn bazillions of dollars. It's only purpose is to show the world that Subbuteo lives and thrives in America, and it's a way of linking what we do to a good cause.>>

Kumba v Hollywood Hammers

Season 9 Match Day 6 (Fri Mar 26)

It was a night of opposites.  Wayne Smith's and Simon Hutchinson's B teams, Left Hannover the Table 96 and Red Star, had good nights winning all of their games.  The other players' had a wretched time.

In the first round of games Dominic Hutchinson's Kumba, lost by the smallest margin to Left Hannover of the night, going down to a goal conceded in the second half.  Jason Mitchell's Valley Irons started their league campaign with a Mercy rule loss to Red Star.

Pos   Player Pl Pts
1 Wayner Bremen 11 23
2 Left Hannover 11 21
3 Red Star 13 20
4 Kumba 14 18
5 Simi City 10 17
6 H Hammers 15 14
7 Inventus 12 7
8= Inter Nieman 10 5
8= Valley Irons 6 5

What followed was the bottom of the table battle between Valley Irons and Kevin Nieman's Inter Nieman.  The game finished tied and was described, not surprisingly for a game between teams in this position, as "very dull" and "the worst Subbuteo match".  In the Hutchinsons' derby Red Star bested Kumba by a single first half goal.

Inter Nieman's misery continued as they were well beaten by Left Hannover.  Jason's Hollywood Hammers beat Kumba, with a goal scored with just five seconds left to play.

In the last round of games of the night the the Hammers became the first team to score against Left Hannover, even though they lost 1-3.  Red Star winning streak continued with a single goal victory against Inter Nieman.

Wayne's Wayner Bremen remain in first place in the league table, with 23 points from 11 games.  Wayne's B team, Left Hannover, moved up three places into second place, two points behind first place.  Red Star are now third, up two places, a point behind Left Hannover but have played two more games.  Kumba dropped from second to fourth, two points behind the Reds.  Simon's Simi City did not play, and dropped from third to fifth, one points behind Kumba and with four games in hand.  There is then a three point gap to the Hammers in sixth place.  Kevin's A team, Inventus, are in seventh place with half the number of points as the Hammers and with three games in hand.  Inter Nieman and Valley Irons remain at the bottom of the table, two points behind Inventus.  Kevin pointed out that having played 16 games with both of his teams he is yet to win a game.

Trish Baumeler

Twin nominated for Best Newcomer (Fri Mar 26)

Trisha Baumeler is one of the nominees for FISTF's Best Newcomer of 2009 award.

Trisha is a member of the Southern California Subuteo Club's Swiss twin club, Subbuteo Players Aargau Süd.  We were fortunate to meet her and her father, Thomas, in August of last year during their vacation.  They came and played in the Father of the Playstation's birthday bash, and she proved a tough opponent for the SCSC's players.

Since then she has played in two of the biggest events in Europe the Major of Mons and the Grand Prix of Berlin, doing well in both the Women's and Under 15 competitions.

We wanted to say Herzlichen Glückwunsch und viel Glück to her, and hope she is the eventual winner this award.

David Jensen v John Carroll

Western States Open (Sat Mar 13)

For the major tournament of the Western region and the first FISTF tournament in California the turnout was rather disappointing, as only half the number of players played this year when compared to the 2008 tournament.  Thank you to those who did take part in this year's tournament, your effort to make it is appreciated.

Wayne Smith remains the only Californian to have won the Western States Open, this is the fourth time he has won this trophy.  He finished with a 100% winning record.  David Jensen finished as runner up, the second time he has been a beaten finalist.  David's finished top of Group A by goal difference, thereby, ensuring he did not meet Wayne in the semi finals.  Group B runner up John Carroll finished third, after losing to David in the semi final and then beating Group A runner up, Simon Hutchinson, in the third place play off.

Kevin Nieman won the Mary Jane competition.  He finished in the bottom half of Group B by goal difference, which consigned him to the consolation bracket.  He beat Dominic Hutchinson in the final.  Dominic struggled in the group stage, losing both of his games, but came "good" in Mary Jane, beating Sean Daly in the semi final and then finishing on the wrong end of a five goal thriller against Kevin.  Sean had a tough time conceding 14 goals in four games, and failing to score.

All the results and match reports are on the Western States Open 2010 page»

Left Hannover the Table 96 v Red Star

Season 9 Match Day 5 (Fri Mar 12)

Only three people could make Match Day 5 of the Southern California Subbuteo Club' Season 9, therefore, there were not many games played.

Pos   Player Pl Pts
1 Wayner Bremen 11 23
2 Kumba 11 18
3 Simi City 10 17
4 Left Hannover 8 12
5= H Hammers 13 11
5= Red Star 10 11
7 Inventus 12 7
8= Inter Nieman 7 4
8= Valley Irons 4 4

The night started with two League Cup second round ties that saw both of Jason Mitchell's teams eliminated.  The Valley Irons faced a tough tie for their first game in Season 9, facing Wayne Smith's Left Hannover the Table 96.  The Irons did very well and only lost by a single goal scored with less than a minute left in the game.  The Hollywood Hammers were bested by Simon Hutchinson's Red Star.  The Lefties and the Reds are the first two teams through to the semi finals.  The draw for the semis will be made after the other two second round ties, Simi City versus Kumba and Inventus versus Wayner Bremen, have been played.

In the only league game of the night the Lefties beat the Reds scoring a goal in each half.

As there was only one league game played the only movement in the league table was that the Lefties move up to fourth place, moving above both the Hammers and the Reds.  The top three teams in the league table remain unchanged, with Wayne's Wayner Bremen is first, Dominic Hutchinson's Kumba in second, and Simon's Simi City in third.  The Lefties are now five points behind Simi, with two games in hand.  Kevin Nieman's Inventus remain in seventh, four points behind Simi and the Hammers.  Inter Nieman and the Irons remain at the foot of the table, three points behind Inventus.

Jason Mitchell v Dominic Hutchinson

Season 9 Match Day 4 (Fri Mar 5)

Match Day 4 of the Southern California Subbuteo Club's Season 9 was a low scoring affair with six goals scored in six games.

Pos   Player Pl Pts
1 Wayner Bremen 11 23
2 Kumba 11 18
3 Simi City 10 17
4= H Hammers 13 11
4= Red Star 9 11
6 Left Hannover 7 9
7 Inventus 12 7
8= Inter Nieman 7 4
8= Valley Irons 4 4

Half of the goals were scored in the first round of games as Simon Hutchinson's Simi City defeated Dominic Hutchinson's Kumba, and Jason Mitchell's Hollywood Hammers bested Kevin Nieman's Inter Nieman.

The only other win of the night came in the next round when Simi City defeated the Hammers by a single goal.  The remaining three games all finished tied.  Kevin's Inventus fought out goalless draws with Kumba and Simi City.  The Hammers came back from a goal down to tie with Kumba.

The top two teams in the league table remain unchanged, Wayne Smith's Wayner Bremen is first with a five point lead over Kumba.  Simi City move up one place to third, and are just a point behind Kumba and with a game in hand.  The Hammers move up two places to share fourth with Simon's Red Star.  Wayne's Left Hannover the Table 96 drop one place to sixth.  The bottom three are unchanged.  Inventus now has a three point lead over Inter Nieman and Jason's Valley Irons.
