Season 8 (Thu Oct 29 09)
This hastily arranged evening of Subbuteo was made to allow Munir Merchant to play some of the backlog of games he has. Before tonight he had played only five games, leaving fifteen left to play. He is in danger of running out of time to fulfill his fixtures with only five more "Friday night Subbuteo" before December 31.
He started well holding Wayne Smith goalless in the first half of an "away" game on the wide Mawra pitch. Three second half goals gave Smith his thirteenth win and Merchant his fourth loss of the season.
|
Munir selected to play "away" against Simon Hutchinson for his next game. Simon scored a goal in either half for his seventh win of the season.
Smith still has a fourteen point lead at the top of the league table. Simon remains in second place with a seven point lead over third place Kevin Nieman, who has three games in hand. Jason Mitchell is in fourth, five points behind Kevin and nine points ahead of Merchant. Merchant has five games in hand over Mitchell, and thirteen left to play this season. Dominic Hutchinson is at the foot of the table two points behind Merchant, and has played four more games.

Season 8 (Fri Oct 23 09)
Certain things never change. One of those is Wayne Smith winning all of his games during a night. Tonight he beat Jason Mitchell, Dominic Hutchinson, and Simon Hutchinson. In theory all the players, except Dominic, can pass Smith and move to the top of the table, but it is looking like Wayne has done enough already to finish in first place.
The gap between Simon in second place and third place Kevin Nieman has been reduced by one point to four points, with Nieman having two games in hand. Both played two games tonight. Simon beat Mitchell and lost his last game with Smith. Nieman narrowly beat Dominic and tied with Mitchell.
|
After two defeats and a draw Mitchell remains in fourth place and is now five points behind third place. Dominic remains at the foot of the table with two points.
Munir Merchant was absent again and he has played less than half the games the others have. There is now a concern that he will not be able finish his games before the end of the season.
Season 8 photos (Thu Oct 22 09)

Season 8 (Fri Oct 16 09)
Jason Mitchell beat Dominic Hutchinson in the League Cup semi final by a single goal. Mitchell will meet Wayne Smith in the cup final.
In league play first place Smith received two shocks tonight. The first was to lose to Kevin Nieman, his second defeat this season, and the second was to concede the first goal of the game against bottom of the table Dominic. Smith bounced back and trounced Dominic by scoring six goals. Between those two games he beat Simon Hutchinson by a single goal.
|
Mitchell played Dominic again, this time in a league game, and this game ended as a tie. Mitchell then came back from behind to draw with Nieman.
Smith has 27 points and an eight point lead over second place Simon, and has played one less game. Simon has 19 points, five more than third place Nieman, who has 14 points and two games in hand. Mitchell is in fourth two points behind third place with 12 points and with a game in hand. Munir Merchant, who did not play tonight, is in fifth, eight points behind Mitchell and with four games in hand. Dominic remains in last place even though he doubled his number of points, and he is two points behind Merchant and played four more games.
Twins page (Tue Oct 13 09)
The Southern California Subbuteo Club has a number of clubs in other countries they have "twinned" with.
The club twins with only one club per country. The idea behind "twinning" is to foster friendly relationships between the players of the SCSC and the players of clubs in different nations.
The information about the "twinned" clubs is scattered over various pages, therefore, we have created a specific page just with the information about our twins. You can see their information on the Twins page»
Congrats to Jason and Elizabeth (Sun Oct 11 09)
The Southern California Subbuteo Club would like to congratulate Jason Mitchell and Elizabeth Bradshaw on their engagement. By email he told us that he popped the question in Paris, France, on Tuesday (October 6).

We hope that he has explained to her that Friday evenings are for Subbuteo.
Season 8 (Fri Oct 9 09)
There were only four games played tonight.
In the first game Wayne Smith defeated Kevin Nieman in the League Cup semi final. The other semi final is between Jason Mitchell and Dominic Hutchinson.
Simon Hutchinson reached the midway point of his season, playing his tenth game and he managed to ensure that he had played everyone twice. His victory over Munir Merchant was his fourth "home" win out of five. He went on to win his first "away" game, despite conceding a goal in the first minute, against Nieman. Previously Hutchinson had tied four of his "away" games and lost one.
|
Merchant decided as he was tired and not playing well he would play Smith as there was little chance of him winning, even if he was playing well. Munir's expectation was realized as Wayne won his seventh game.
There is no change in the order of the players in the league table. Smith is in first place with twenty one points. Hutchinson is two points behind him, but he has played three more games. Mitchell and Nieman remain in third nine points behind Simon, and both have games in hand. Merchant has played less games than everyone else. He is in fifth with four points, six points behind third place. Dominic is in last place, three points adrift of Merchant.
From the FISTF newsletter (Fri Oct 9 09)
A story about the Carl Nielsen Memorial Challenge appeared in this week's FISTF newsletter (No.277)...
13. USA: Carl Nielsen Memorial Challenge
On Saturday 3 October, 2009, the Southern California Subbuteo Club played host to players from two other Subbuteo clubs for the Carl Nielsen Memorial
Challenge. Anders Bruhl Hansen,Jesper Staal Nielsen, and Kristian Staal Nielsen represented the Lega Liga Subbuteo Club of Odense, Denmark, and ex-SCSC
regular Ric Rivas and his wife Seow Yin made the journey from Tucson, Arizona to take part. The Rivases were previously members of the Lions Subbuteo Club,
Singapore.
The event was deemed a "challenge" rather then a tournament so that everyone could play the members of the other clubs, rather than the people
in their own club.
The Danes were so much better than everyone else winning seven of their eight games, including four "mercy rule" victories. The eighth game was a
tie between Hansen and the SCSC’s Wayne Smith. The "mercy rule" stops the game when one of the players reaches a four goal lead over their
opponent.
Ric found it hard to keep up with his former club mates after a long lay off from playing. He lost by three goals to Dominic Hutchinson, and by a single
goal to Simon Hutchinson. Seow Yin only played one game, in which she was "mercy ruled" by the older Hutchinson.
And why did we name this event after Carl Nielsen? Nielsen was born in a small village to the south of Odense, and died on 3 October 1931 making the day of
the Challenge the 78th anniversary of his demise.
All the results and a full report can be found on the Carl Nielsen Memorial Challenge page on the SCSC’s website.

Carl Nielsen Memorial Challenge (Sat Oct 3 09)
The Southern California Subbuteo Club welcomed three guests from the Lega Liga Subbuteo Club from Odense, Denmark, and former SCSC regular Ric Rivas returned with his wife Seow Yin. The event was deemed a "challenge" so that everyone could play the visitors and not have to play the other members of their club.
The Danes, Anders Bruhl Hansen, Jesper Staal Nielsen and his brother Kristian, were so much better than the SCSC players winning seven of their eight games, including four "mercy rule" victories. The eighth game was a tie between Hansen and Wayne Smith.
Ric found it hard to keep up with his former club mates after a long lay off from playing. He lost by three goals to Dominic Hutchinson, and by a single goal to Simon Hutchinson. Seow Yin only played one game, in which she was "mercy ruled" by the older Hutchinson.
All the results and a reports from the games can be seen on the Carl Nielsen Memorial Challenge page»
Season 8 photos (Fri Oct 2 09)
