Small changes to web site (Mon Jun 29 09)

ICRA label

In the past couple of weeks the Southern California Subbuteo Club has made a couple of minor changes to this web site.

The first is the drop down in the navigation area at the top of each page.  This will allow you to select sections of this site that were previous only linked to on the Sitemap page.

Secondly, in our continuing efforts to guarantee that our site is appropriate for surfers of all ages we have registered with the Internet Content Rating Association (ICRA).  ICRA is an international, non-profit organization working to protect children from potentially harmful material on the internet.  By inserting a "label" into this site's web pages allows filtering software to allow or disallow access to them based on the information declared in the "label".  We have declared that the contents of this web site is appropriate for everyone.  Click on the ICRA image next to this story to view our site's "label".

Proposed format for Season 8 (Thu Jun 25 09)

Heavy weight Subbuteo figure

At the end of Season 7 a new format for the next season was proposed by the players in the Wooden Spoon group.

The proposal was that there be two divisions, corresponding to the Stage Two groups in Season 7.  Each player would play the other players in their division four times, twice "home" and twice "away".  Then the players in the second division would play each of the players in the first division once, with the first division players using the "away" goalkeepers.

If the same number of players participate in Season 8 as they did in Season 7 each player would play sixteen games, twelve divisional games (three players x four games) and four inter-divisional games.

If there are an odd number of players the first division would be the larger division.

There would not be automatic promotion between the two divisions.  At the end of the season the second division champion would play the player who finished in last place in the first division.  The winner of the game would be placed in the first division the next season and the loser would be placed in the second division.

This is just a proposal and has not been accepted as the format for next season.  The Season 8 league committee would like to hear from the players who participated in Season 7 and everyone who is likely to take part in the new season on their thoughts on this proposal.

If anyone else has any suggestions for Season 8 they should contact the Southern California Subbuteo Club using the Contact page.

The League Cup would be retained.

ASA Rolling Rankings (Fri Jun 12 09)

American Subbuteo Association logo

The American Subbuteo Association published the latest Rolling Rankings on June 1.  There were no ASA Opens last month in the USA, and as the yearly window shifted many Subbuteo players in the USA lost points from their rankings.  This has benefited most of the Southern California Subbuteo Club's players who rose in the rankings, when compared to last month.  For the first time the SCSC has three players in the top twenty:

6. Wayne Smith   51. David Jensen
15. Steve Tucker   53. Jason Mitchell
19. Simon Hutchinson   59. Edgar Flores, Ian Sayer
28. Kevin Nieman   71. Dominic Hutchinson,
39. John Carroll   82. Adam Carlson, Edward Nathan
48. Munir Merchant   110. Sean Daly

What are the Rolling Rankings?
Only the ranking points won in the last twelve months are counted. If the player has played in more than five ASA tournaments in that time period only the points won in their best five finishes are counted.

When does Season 8 start? (Mon Jun 8 09)

8?

The Southern California Subbuteo Club's league play is in hiatus over the summer months,  Next season, Season 8, will start in September.

The new season is probably going to use a different format to the one used in Season 6 and Season 7.  Keep checking this web site to see the proposed structure.

While there will be no league play over the summer there will be tournaments and friendly games.  The California State Championship is on Saturday August 15.  There will probably be another tournament earlier in August, and possibly another in July.  Keep checking this web site for the announcements and details of Subbuteo action in southern California.

Season 7 finale (Fri Jun 5 09)

Season 7 winners

Before tonight both of the Southern California Subbuteo Club's Season 7 championships and League Cup winner were undecided.

The Championship group title was between Steve Tucker and Wayne Smith, who had to play each other twice.  In the Wooden Spoon group the title could be won by either Munir Merchant or Jason Mitchell.

In the opening games of the night Munir beat Dominic Hutchinson and moved to the top of the Wooden Spoon group, with a one point lead over Jason.  Wayne's "home" win against Steve widen his lead at the top to five points.  Steve narrowed the gap to two points after his next game by beating Kevin Nieman.  Jason's and Munir's tie was enough to give Munir the Wooden Spoon championship even though he had one game left to play.  Munir went on to win his final game of the season, beating Dominic for the second time.

Steve's "home" game against Wayne was the title decider.  He had to win the game to win the championship, if he failed to do so then the championship was Wayne's.  It started brightly with Steve taking a two goal lead by the middle of the first half.  Wayne pulled a goal back just before half time.  The play in the second half was very even, and many of those present were cheering on Steve to hold onto his lead.  Alas, an own goal tied the game in the third minute.  Despite their best efforts neither player was able to score another goal.  As the game ended even Wayne had won the Season 7 championship.

The second leg of the League Cup was the last game of Season 7.  The first leg had ended goalless, and Simon Hutchinson had the task of trying not to lose to Wayne to win the cup.  It all went horribly wrong for him and he was four goals down in a little more than five minutes of the first half.  There were more goals in the second half and Wayne won the game by 6-1, and claimed the Season 7 championship and cup double.

At the end of the night the winners were awarded their trophies:

  • Championship Group champion:  Wayne Smith
  • Wooden Spoon Group champion:  Munir Merchant
  • Wooden spoon winner:  Dominic Hutchinson
  • League Cup winner:  Wayne Smith
