Draw for the Galaxy Cup (Mon Apr 27 09)
The draw for next Saturday's Los Angeles Galaxy Subbuteo Cup has been made using the player's current American Subbuteo Association rolling rankings. The draw is (tournament ranking is in parentheses):
| Round 1 | ||
| Wayne Smith (1) | v | Dominic Hutchinson (8) |
| Kevin Nieman (4) | v | John Carroll (5) |
| Simon Hutchinson (3) | v | Munir Merchant (6) |
| David Jensen (7) | v | Steve Tucker (2) |
| Semi finals | ||
| Smith/D Hutchinson | v | Nieman/Carroll |
| S Hutchinson/Merchant | v | Jensen/Tucker |
The draw for the semi finals is the same for both the winners and the losers brackets.
ANZAC Day Tournament (Sat Apr 25 09)
Four players honored the memories of the ANZAC diggers today by taking part in today's tournament.
It turned out to be another closely fought tournament with the eventual winner, Wayne Smith, saying that the standard of play in Southern California Subbuteo Club's tournaments has improved dramatically in the past two years.
As there were four players everyone played each other twice, once at "home" and then "away" with the "away" player using the small Subbuteo/Zeugo goalkeeper.
Wayne cruised through the tournament with six wins out of six games, Simon Hutchinson finished second, Kevin Nieman was third, and David Jensen fourth. The "deciding" match in the battle for second place saw Simon run up a three goal first half lead in his "home" game against Kevin. While David lost all of his games he did prove a difficult opponent to beat, as shown by the small margin of his losses.
Season 7 (Fri Apr 24 09)
Tonight was the penultimate night of Stage One of Season 7. With the absence of Adam Carlson from tonight's Subbuteo all but two of the outstanding games were played.
Kevin Nieman's "away" win against Jason Mitchell looks to have secured him third place, despite his later loss to Steve Tucker. The first of the two games between Dominic Hutchinson and Munir Merchant ended a goalless tie, the second was an "away" win for Munir. Two more victories, against Kevin and Munir, means Steve can still finish Stage One in first place, despite being held for a draw by Jason.
Wayne Smith, who has played all of his games in this stage, remains in first place. Steve is ten points behind him with four games in hand. Kevin is in third six points behind second place. Simon Hutchinson rounds out the top half of the table, three points behind Kevin and with two games left to play in this stage. Jason remains in fifth two points behind Simon, with one game left. Munir's win over Dominic moved him into sixth place, he now has one more point than Dominic, who is in seventh. Adam remains in eighth place, with nine games left to be played. It is looking increasingly unlikely that he can play them before the deadline for Stage One. If he unable to do so the Season 7 League Committee will have to decide whether he should be removed from this competition.

Season 7 (Wed Apr 22 09)
Kevin Nieman showed why he would be the candidate for "Most Improved Player in Season 7" in his double header with Wayne Smith. Kevin won his "home" game by a single goal, frustrating Wayne by the length of time he retained possession and the way he controlled the ball. When Wayne did get an opportunity to shoot it was not up to his usual standard.
In the return game, "home" for Wayne, Kevin suffered what he called his opponent's "revenge" for the earlier victory going down by four goals.
These games were Wayne's last of Stage One, and he remains in first place. Steve Tucker is in second place 17 points behind Wayne with seven games in hand, so he can still finish Stage One in first place. Kevin and Simon Hutchinson share third place with four points less than Steve. Kevin has played three less games than Simon. The bottom four remain unchanged.

Season 7 (Fri Apr 17 09)
Kevin Nieman won four points tonight with a win over Dominic Hutchinson and a tie with Munir Merchant. He looks almost certain to finish Stage One of the season in the top half of the league table as he is in equal fourth place, with Jason Mitchell and has four games in hand.
The top three, Wayne Smith, Steve Tucker and Simon Hutchinson remain unchanged. Kevin is now three points behind Simon with five games in hand. Dominic dropped one place from fifth to sixth. Munir remains in seventh, two points behind Dominic and with two games in hand. Adam Carlson remains at the foot of the table, four points behind Munir and with four games in hand.
Wayne became the first player to reach the League Cup final, beating Kevin by a single goal in the second leg of their semi final. Wayne will play the winner of the other semi final between Simon and Steve.

Season 7 (Fri Apr 10 09)
Due to work commitments and injuries no Season 7 league games were played last night. But there were two Supplemental friendlies.
The first game ended with the highest score of the season as Steve Tucker experimented with various tactics against Wayne Smith. The second game was more even and ended in a tie.
In world news... (Thu Apr 9 09)
The FISTF blog, Livre Indirecto the Portuguese Subbuteo blog, and the weekly FISTF newletter all have a story about Saturday's ASA Open.
ASA Open 4 April in California
On Saturday 4 April the Southern California Subbuteo Club hosted their second National Open tournament of the year. There was plenty of excitement as the there were many upsets and the top seeds had a tougher time than they expected.
Highlights were:
- Sixth seed, Munir Merchant, beating the number one and two seeds.
- Kevin Nieman in the Mary Jane semi final fighting back from 0-3 down at half time to tie the game. Alas, he lost the shoot out.
- Simon Hutchinson fought back from 0-2 down at half time in the final, and almost hung on to deny Wayne Smith his run of tournament wins.
Congratulations to all the winners:
- Open winner : Wayne Smith
- Runner up : Simon Hutchinson
- Third place : John Carroll
- Mary Jane winner : Munir Merchant
- Runner up : Steve Tucker
- Third : Kevin Nieman

Season 7 (Wed Apr 8 09)
There were two midweek games played in the Southern California Subbuteo Club's Season 7 tonight. Steve Tucker played back-to-back games with Wayne Smith. In his "home" game Steve fought back from two goals down to tie the game. The "away" game was more brutal as Steve felt that Wayne scored with every shot he had on target. This was Steve's first defeat of the season.
There is no change in the order of players in the league table. Wayne can now win a maximum of 36 points in Stage One, this means that Steve has to win all of his remaining seven games to claim first place by a point.

ASA Rolling Rankings (Mon Apr 5 09)
The American Subbuteo Association published the latest Rolling Rankings on April 4, the same day as the Southern California Subbuteo Club's ASA tournament. Therefore, these rankings do not include any ranking points won in that tournament.
This is how the Southern California Subbuteo Club players are ranked:
| 6. | Wayne Smith | 52. | David Jensen | |
| 12. | Steve Tucker | 55. | Jason Mitchell | |
| 29. | Simon Hutchinson | 62. | Edgar Flores, Ian Sayer | |
| 30. | Kevin Nieman | 75. | Dominic Hutchinson, | |
| 46. | John Carroll | 83. | Edward Nathan, Adam Carlson | |
| 50. | Munir Merchant | 112. | Sean Daly |
Most players remain unchanged. The only changes when compared to last month's rankings were: Steve Tucker down two places, Simon Hutchinson down three, and Kevin Nieman down two.
When the results from the Open are included in the rolling rankings next month hopefully we will see some of the SCSC's players climb in the rankings.
What are the Rolling Rankings?
Only the ranking points won in the last twelve months are counted. If the player has played in more than five ASA tournaments in that time period only the points
won in their best five finishes are counted.
ASA Open tournament (Sat Apr 4 09)
The tournament opened with Munir Merchant beating the first and second seeds, Wayne Smith and Steve Tucker, in back-to-back games. This threw the tournament wide open. At the end of group play no-one was surprised that Wayne finished top of the group. John Carroll and Simon Hutchinson finished in equal second place with the same number points, and they would be the Open semi final. Munir finished in fourth place and received a bye to the Mary Jane final. Steve, fifth, and Kevin Nieman, sixth, played in the Mary Jane semi final.
Both of the semi finals were decided by shoot outs. Simon won the Open semi final out shooting John. In the Mary Jane semi final Kevin made the greatest come back in the history of the Southern California Subbuteo Club fighting back from three goals down against Steve, but he lost the shoot out.
The Mary Jane final between Munir and Steve was a closely fought encountered and ended goalless. In the shoot out Munir scored the only goal to win his first tournament title.
Two early goals from Wayne gave him what he thought was a safe lead. Simon fought back to tie the game before the middle of the second half. Alas, a defensive error by Simon, with three minute left, gave Wayne the shot he needed to score the goal to win.
All of the results and a full report can be found on the ASA Open page.
Open- Winner: Wayne Smith
- Runner up: Simon Hutchinson
- Third: John Carroll
- Winner: Munir Merchant
- Runner up: Steve Tucker
- Third: Kevin Nieman
Season 7 (Fri Apr 3 09)
Tonight belonged to Steve Tucker. He won his three games, beating Dominic Hutchinson, Simon Hutchinson and Munir Merchant, scoring seven goals and keeping clean sheets in all of the games. He is the only player in Season 7 with a 100% winning record, and yet to concede a goal. The three wins moved him up from sixth to second place.
In the only other league game Munir and Jason Mitchell fought out a goalless draw
There were number of Supplements friendly games too.
Wayne Smith remains in first place. Steve Tucker has five games in hand and is eleven points behind him. Simon Hutchinson is a point behind. Jason Mitchell is a point behind Simon and rounds out the top four. Dominic Hutchinson drops out of the top four for the first time this season with two points less than Jason. Kevin Nieman is two points behind Dominic with five games in hand. Munir Merchant is in seventh place and a point behind Kevin. Adam Carlson sits at the foot of the table with three points less than Munir and with three games in hand.
Munir observed after tonight's play how things had changed when compared to Season 6 when he and Simon were in fourth and third places.
