Season 6 (Fri Oct 31 08)

Five Season 6 games were played at Steve Tucker's home as a string of trick-or-treaters came up to the garage door for candy and to watch the Subbuteo action.  We handed out a few business cards to the adults accompanying their children, who expressed an interest in what we are playing.

Wayne Smith kept his 100% record this season defeating Munir Merchant, Kevin Nieman, and Steve.  Steve had earlier beaten Kevin, and then was held to a tie by Munir, a repeat of last week's result.  Munir joins Wayne as the only players that Steve has not beaten in this stage of the season.  In a friendly, Supplemental, game Munir's run of victories over Kevin continued.

These results mean that the battle to finish in the top half of the table at the end of Stage 1 is hotting up.  Wayne is assured of finishing in first place.  Simon Hutchinson and Steve share second place, with Steve having a game in hand.  Kevin and Munir share fourth place, eight points behind Simon and Steve, and Munir has played one less game than Kevin.  As the bottom three players did not play tonight there is no change at the foot of the table.

FISTF newsletter No. 228 (Fri Oct 31 08)

The following is taken from this week's Federation International Sport Table Football (FISTF) newsletter.

<< 9. USA: Maricoba Cup R8

The day started with six players but as the event wore on we lost two to injuries. Dominic Hutchinson hurt his hand while doing over exaggerated saves with his goalkeeper, and Greg Willey's back went into spasms after two games.

The last game turned out to be the decider as to who would finish in first place. Edward Nathan had won all of his games, while Wayne Smith had been held to a draw by Simon Hutchinson. Wayne had to win this game to continue his run of winning all the rounds of this year's Maricopa Cup. After a goalless first half Wayne scored twice in the third and tenth minutes of the second half, only for Edward to pull one back and make a for tense last few minutes.

In the other games David Jensen and Simon tied twice, with David scoring from quick breaks within the first two minutes of both games.

Due to the withdrawals the players did not play the same number of games, therefore, the final positions in the table was determined by average points won. Wayne finished in first place with an average of 2.80 points per game, Edward was in second with 2.50, Simon took third with 2.00, David fourth with 1.40, and Dominic and Willey shared fifth place with 1.00.

Maricopa Cup R8 photos (Thu Oct 30 08)

When there are an even number of players in any event it is difficult to persuade someone to take photographs rather than play.  As we had an even number of players in the Maricopa Cup R8 on Sunday there are only a few pictures from the event.

Maricopa Cup R8 (Sun Oct 26 08)

We welcomed back Edward Nathan who has returned, from Malaysia, to So Cal for three months.  With his old fashioned unpolished Subbuteo bases he almost won the round.  The decider being his last game, all he had to do was not to lose.  That is a tall order when your opponent is Wayne Smith.  Wayne was put in this position of needing to win this game to win the round as he has been held to a tie by Simon Hutchinson.

Season 6 (Fri Oct 24 08)

While only one pair of players swapped places in the table, Dominic Hutchinson trading places with Jason Mitchell, there were a couple of results that could be considered "upsets".  Munir Merchant held Steve Tucker to a goalless draw, and then was beaten by Dominic.   There was the highest scoring game of the season in the battle of the Hutchinsons as nine goals were scored by father Simon and son Dominic.

Wayne Smith won both of his games of the night and remains unbeaten at the top of the table.  Simon is in second place, but Steve has four games in hand and is only four points behind.  Kevin Nieman, who was absent tonight, remains in fourth place, and Munir is just a point behind him with a game in hand.  Dominic is now in sixth place, with two more points and a game in hand over Jason.  Adam Carlson remains at the foot of the table without a point.

Season 6 teams update (Sun Oct 19 08)

Adam Carlson is the last of the players taking part in Season 6 to have a photograph of his first choice team added to the Season 6 participants page.

He still needs to declare a second choice team, but this is probably not necessary as his first choice color combination does not clash with any of the other players.

Season 6 (Fri Oct 17 08)

The evening opened with Jason Mitchell winning his first game of the season, beating Adam Carlson by 1-0.  Jason went on to tie with Simon Hutchinson, 1-1.  Simon just could not score, he had 12 shots at goal and it took a penalty for him to equalize.  The points from these games moved Jason up one place to sixth in the league.

Kevin Nieman beat Adam twice, 1-0.  Adam held his own for periods in both of these games as possession was exchanged in the middle of the pitch.  The difference between the two players was the Kevin could get into shooting positions, while Adam struggled to do the same.  The six points from these wins allowed Kevin to jump from fifth to joint third place.

Season 6 (Fri Oct 3 08)

Munir Merchant became the first person in Season 6 to do "a double", defeating Kevin Nieman for the second time.  This made up for Munir's earlier loss to Simon Hutchinson.

Kevin, in the first game of the evening, had beaten Dominic Hutchinson.  Dominic dominated the first five minutes, and scored a cracking goal taking his opponent totally by surprise.  In those first few minutes it looked like Dominic was going to win, before Kevin regained his composure and equalized.

FISTF newsletter No. 224 (Fri Oct 3 08)

The following is taken from this week's Federation International Sport Table Football (FISTF) newsletter.

<< 7. USA: Maricopa Cup R7
Saturday's seventh round of the Maricopa Cup saw Wayne Smith finish top of the table, saying this was some of the best Subbuteo he has ever played. David Jensen, competing in his third tournament, caused an upset beating Kevin Nieman by a single goal. With the special Maricopa point system (win = 3, draw = 2, loss = 1) Munir Merchant finished in second place with one win and three draws. Kevin claimed third with one win and two draws. Simon Hutchinson finished in fourth, with the same number of wins and draws as Kevin, but played less games than the other players. We did shoot video during this competition, which will be added to the site when it has been edited.

Munir's third game on Saturday was his 100th. He is the eighth player in the Southern California Subbuteo Club to reach this milestone. This is all the more remarkable as he has only been playing for eight months.

Games played in a year (Wed Oct 1 08)

When browsing through the old new stories I found one in September 2007 about the number of games the members of the Southern California Subbuteo Club had played, you can read the story here.  This story prompted the keeping of the record of games played that you can see on the Games Played page.

When you compare the numbers from the end of September 2007 to the end of September 2008 I was surprised by the number of games the club's members have played in these twelve months.  The top six are listed below.

Total games played on
Name Sep 30, 07 Sep 30, 08 Difference
Simon Hutchinson 168 378 210
Wayne Smith 262 453 191
Kevin Nieman 128 285 157
Dominic Hutchinson 70 193 123
Munir Merchant 0 102 102
Steve Tucker 98 172 74
