Match Reports

Group B:  Wayne Smith 4 v Kevin Nieman 1
Kevin:  My touch was sorry, but I had a few chances.  I scored making it 1-2, but Wayne capitalized on an open net and general lapses in my defense.  Good match... for Wayne.
Wayne:  I felt great, the pitch was perfect and my figures were gliding brilliantly. Kevin scored a very noce goal, but kept stranding his keeper.

Back

Group A:  David Jensen 2 v Dominic Hutchinson 0
Dominic:  A fairly soul crushing game. David did a very good charge down the side and scored.  Then I scored an own goal. David then played very defensively after that.
David:  I scored about two minutes into the game and then Dominic scored an own goal about five minutes later.  After that I could stay back on defense and counter attack.  Dominic had some chances but couldn't get into a good shooting position.

Back

Group B:  John Carroll 5 v Sean Daly 0
Sean:  John got better and more confident as the game went on.  He got some great second half goals.
John:  We spent the first half playing each other very cautiously, 1-0 at half time.  The second half was more wide open and my new bases paid off with three moving ball goals.  Sean hit the post three times.

Back

Group B:  John Carroll 1 v Kevin Nieman 1
Kevin:  John scored a cracking end ot end push and took me by surprise.  In the second half, I shot a chipper over his keeper's rod to even it up.  Fun match.  Always good to play against John.
John:  Kevin kept solid defense all game and frustrated my forwards.  Kevin's shot was very accurate.

Back

Group B:  Wayne Smith 5 v Sean Daly 0
Wayne:  I started quickly and then just countered.
Sean:  Wayne is a very skilled player who rarely misses the goal when he shoots.  I made three nice saves but the other shots were excellent shots usually to the far post.  I tried to slow down his scoring by keeping possession and it did result in one offensive threat, but Wayne quickly marshaled his defense and my scoring chance evaporated.

Back

Group A: Simon Hutchinson 1 v Dominic Hutchinson 0
Dominic:  Awful tournament so far.  My touch seems to have left me, but at least I am enjoying myself.  Ugh.
Simon:  It was a struggle for the win.  Dominic played well in defense to frustrate me, and when I could get through [his defense] I squandered too many chances.  Just glad to make my first game a win.

Back

Group A: Simon Hutchinson 1 v David Jensen 1
David  A well balanced game.  I scored in the first half and then played more defensive.  I let my players get too spread out and Simon punched through to score the equalizer.  We both had several chances after that, but it stayed 1-1.  Overall I'm pleased with the result because I had a good goal differential in my first game.
Simon:  Very disappointed to have tied a game I had to win to finish top o the group.  The tie means I have to face Wayne in the semi finals.  Disappointed in the way I played.  I had seeral chances but David made great saves to deny me several what I thought were goals.

Back

Group B:  Wayne Smith 3 v John Carroll 1
John:  Wayne has pin point accurate shots.  I feel fortunate to keep him to three [goals].  Struck one [goal] past him by hitting a moving ball.
Wayne:  That was a really tough match.  Both of us could have scored a few more goals, but our offensive touch let us down.  I couldn't react fast enough to make a flick.  Once I took a two goal lead, I thought I was really in business, but John's goal stopped me in my tracks.

Back

Group B:  Kevin Nieman 1 v Sean Daly 0
Kevin:  I need a bazillion goals to go through to the next round and I only scored one.  Sean always brings his A-game against me, and he has great blocking flicks.  Fun match, but not a stellar opening round.
Sean:  Kevin always brings out my best.  I definitely had my best game with several scoring chances.  Kevin stayed patient and eventually chipped my goalie for the win.  Fun match.

Back

Open Semi final:  Wayne Smith 2 v Simon Hutchinson 1
Wayne:  Simon played an excellent match.  When I took the a 1-0 lead I thought I could coast and counter attack, but he kept closing me down in midfield.  He tied the game with a great interplay leading to a nice goal.  I managed the game winner with 1:31 left with a strong chip from the right wing.  With second 30 seconds left Simon hit my far post on a shot.
Simon:  So close. I almost equalized in the last attack of the game.  I got around his defense and with just 30 seconds left chipped his goalkeeper, hit the bottom of the post, and the ball bounced out for the throw in.  Perhaps it could have been different with a round rather than a square goalpost.

Back

Open Semi final:  David Jensen 3 v John Carroll 2
John:  Dave scored in the first minute with a perfect chip shot.  I leveled it by half time and was hopeful going into the second half.  We were tied with two minutes to go when, again, Dave pulled out the pitching wedge.  Beauty in the upper "V".
David:  A very exciting game with lot of attacking.  I got ahead and was able to stay there about half way though the second half.  My last goal was a very long angle shot that got a nice chip into the corner.

Back

Mary Jane Semi final:  Dominic Hutchinson 3 v Sean Daly 0
Dominic:  Definitely felt I played well.  His defense was surprisingly good.  Not looking forward to the next round.
Sean:  Low table made it difficult to focus on the game. [Sean was referring to his back pain]

Back

Open Third place:  John Carroll 1 v Simon Hutchinson 0
John:  A back and forth match that was wide open at times.  The first half possession was all Simon's.  I scored whe a clearance from my back line landed at the foot of my forward for a quick goal.  The final minute featured about four shots by Simon on my goal - including as the final whistle blew.  Close match!
Simon:  Disappointing with the game.  I had plenty of possession and shots on goal.  John's goalkeeper came up big to deny me a goal.  Was lines up for a good shot on goal when the buzzer went off.

Back

Mary Jane final:  Kevin Nieman 3 v Dominic Hutchinson 2
Kevin:  This is the highest scoring match I've had against Dominic in a while.  Dominic had the misfortune of going a goal down in 53 seconds.  I flicked well and stopped a great shot by Dom.  Then I went 2-0 up, but Dom tied it until I went ahead on a freaky angle.  Good match against Dominic.
Dominic:  This was a good game.  The end score was unexpected, but Kevin has really improved his shooting with his new bases.  He made three amazing shots at weird angles and scored all of them.  The cool thing is he didn't score a normal one [goal].  All of my goals were normal ones, so no complaint there.

Back

Open final:  Wayne Smith 3 v David Jensen 0
David:  I was very pleased to make the final but disappointed with how I played.  I missed a lot of flicks and kept turning the ball over at midfield.  The score was 1-0 at the half so I tried to press more in the second but this allowed Wayne to counter attack and score a couple more times.
Wayne:  David wasn't exactly "on".  He missed a ton of short range flicks.  Defensively he was pretty good, but I managed to get around his end a few times.
