Fri Oct 9: League Cup semi final: Kevin Nieman 0 v Wayne Smith 3 (HT 0-2)

Comments:
Wayne: I was quite comfortable and my tiny keeper actually made a save. My shooting was quite good. Kevin didn't get a decent bouce as he hit a post, popped one over the goal, and hit my keeper.
Kevin: This was fun. I always felt like I am a spectator in the Wayne Smith World Tour. Yet this time, for every goal he scored on me, I had added indignity of writing all of his goals down [in the log we keep of all games]. Double indignity! One half expected Fred MacMurray and Barbara Stanwick to walk into the room [these were the actors who starred in the 1944 film noir Double Indemnity]. Anyway, yet another match where Wayne plays like Wayne.

As Merchant resigned from the season before playing 50% of his fixtures this game is considered a Supplemental game.

Comments:
Simon: A very even first half with lots of open play. For long periods both of us only had four back in defense, and the rest in midfield. The game changed after I scored the first goal. It was a good sliced shot from the right into the top left [of the goal]. It took Munir by surprise. Munir was unfortunate to concede a penalty, due to hand ball, early in the second half. I struck it well, hitting the underside of the crossbar and in [to the goal]. The third [goal] came from a low shot to the near post.
Munir: The first half was interesting with open play. I felt the game was relatively even until the penalty. My shooting was very poor. I had a few shots, none at goal. Simon played well, good control and opportunities taken advantage of.

Wayne: I played quite well and Munir's keeper wasn't having a good day.
Munir: I played quite poorly and Wayne's striker was having a good day. Good shots from Wayne, bad shots from me too.

Comments:
Kevin: Very disappointing as I took an early lead, but Simon's determined play stole the home victory from me. Good pressure just failed to make a mark and I am considering sacking the team a stealing one of Wayne's super teams and passing it off as the mighty Juventus [the team Kevin uses]. No-one will suspect. And writing this down for all to see certainly doesn't ruin my plan. Oh, darn!
Simon: Disappointed to have conceded a goal so early, but I knew if I could concentrate and apply pressure I had plenty of time to equalize. After that goal the rest of the first half was even. The second [half] was more mine as I kept on pressing. My equalizer was from the position you would take a shot from a shoot out, wide on the left side line just inside the shooting zone. I took my time and chipped the goalkeeper perfectly. Later Kevin's defensive error left me with a clear shot on goal for my second, a "back" allowed me to touch up and then blast the ball into the goal. After all the draws I have had I am happy to get my first away win of the season.

Comments:
Dominic: I felt the game went well. The play was slow, yet tactical enough to keep it engaging. Jason's goal was lucky, but being lucky won him the game.
Jason: A very tough game. Dominic's game has improved since I've been to England [Jason had just returned from a vacation to England]. I was rusty but happy to make the final.

Comments:
Kevin: This was a nervy match as I was playing Wayne as my first home match. My first matches are normally horrible, so I halfway expected a natural deficit. However, I score first in what was the only defensive lapse on Wayne's. I survived Wayne's onslaught and came away with a precious home win. I fell fortunate to keep the "W".
Wayne: Kevin played really well with great ball control and good defense. I got a number of shots, but all either hit the cross bar or hit Kevin's keeper's hands. His saves were helped by Kevin's defense successfully forcing me to the outside.

Simon: A very close game. Wayne's flicking and shooting seemed to be off, and even though he did not dominate the game it went the way it usually does. I have to admit at the start of the second half I really thought I had a chance of getting a draw but his dogged defending and my repeatedly hitting the wrong side of the ball kept the half scoreless.

Kevin: After going up a goal Jason played very well and flicked a shot that hit my hand in the shooting zone and went in the goal. I am disappointed that I did not get two wins tonight, but playing Jason is always fun. So, it's a good result.
Jason: This was a very tight game and a draw was a good result for me. Don't think there were any shots apart from the goals. Needed the win but a draw is OK.
