Supplemental games are friendly games played during Season 6.

Saturday September 20

Simon Hutchinson 3 v  David Jensen 1 (HT 1-0)

The game opened with a lot of "back and forth" as the game ebbed and flowed from one end to the other.  David had the first two shots of game, forcing Simon to save both with his goalkeeper, before Simon scored with his first shot at goal.

David drew level with a goal early in the second half from a powerful shot from almost straight in front of the goal.  In the eighth minute David committed a hand ball in his penalty area, and Simon blasted the penalty into the left side of the goal.  As David pushed forward in search of an equalizer his defense line broke and this allowed Simon to play the ball down the center to a figure on the shooting line.  His shot was too powerful for David to save.

David Jensen 1 v Kevin Nieman 1 (HT 1-0)

In the fifth minute David pressed down the right and hammered a shot over Kevin's goalkeeper, the shot was so hard that the ball bounced back out of the goal.  Play was controlled by both players, but an errant flick in a key area would force a change on either side.

Kevin's goal came within the first three minutes of the second half.  It was a "slow roller".  The rest of the match was a struggle to get that extra goal that eluded both players.

David Jensen 0  v Kevin Nieman 0

Kevin summed up the game in one statement: "Another tight game."

David Jensen 0  v Munir Merchant 0

There was a lot of midfield play with many turn-overs of possession as the final touch deserted both players at the critical time.  Each player had two or three shots but were unable to score.

The only goal of the game came two thirds of the way through the first half.

"It was a pretty defensive game," Munir explained after the game.  "With not many chances.  Although at one point players were scattered all over the field."

"There were very few goal kicks," Kevin added.

Wayne Smith 2 v Jason Mitchell 1 (HT 1-1)

Jason took an early lead.

"At times Jason plays brilliantly," Wayne compliment his opponent.  "If he could be consistent he would be in the running for second or third place.  It was absolutely even in the first half."

"Practice makes perfect," Jason responded, "and I need more practice.  This is a vast improvement since day one when I joined the club.  Another enjoyable match this evening."

Friday November 21

Simon Hutchinson 1 v Jason Mitchell 0 (HT 1-0)

Simon scored in 12:30 a quick one-two on the right followed by a shot over Jason's goalkeeper.

"If only I could turn the attack into goals," Jason lamented, "I would be the Pele of the Subbuteo world."

"Too many missed balls," Simon commented on his play.  "I just had the edge and the score line was a fair result."

Steve Tucker 2 v Adam Carlson 1 (HT 2-1)

"A fun and entertaining game," Steve said after the game.  "Adam some had some offense and be both had fun."

Steve Tucker 5 v  Adam Carlson 0 (HT 2-0)

"That was absolutely the worse game I played today," Adam lamented.

Friday December 12

Simon Hutchinson 5 v Jason Mitchell 1 (HT 0-1)

Jason scored early in the first half, with a chip shot from the left.  The rest of the first half was even.  The second half started even, but as time wore on Simon started dominate.  Simon equalized early in the half, and then scored four goals in the last six minutes.

"That was the most goals I have conceded since I came back to playing," Jason lamented after the game.  "Every shot Simon took seemed to fly into the net."

"Every thing I could not do against Munir worked in the second half of this game," Simon observed.  "The last six minutes were amazing.  Every shot I took was a goal."

Wayne Smith 2 v  Kevin Nieman 1 (HT 2-0)

"Most of the game was typical Wayne," Kevin reported after the game,  "all possession all of the time.  He scored quickly I think..."

"Not that quickly," Munir interjected.

"Defensive lapses on my part cost me the game," Kevin continued.  "For the first goal I stranded my goalkeeper and Wayne scored two flicks later.

"My only goal was from a bizarre angle on the right side.  I cut my shot so sharply that the ball rolled slowly passed Wayne's goalkeeper, leaving Wayne speechless and motionless.  We both looked at each other and said 'Was that a goal?' "

"It was a fun game," Wayne explained.  "At the end of the game I did not remember the score. Which means I was not uptight about the score."

Friday January 2

Goalkeepers

Types of Subbuteo goalkeepers
Left to right: "Small" (Subbuteo/Zeugo),
metal, SportsFigure

In these games different sized goalkeepers were used.  In the first game the players could use the goalkeeper of their choice.  The other two games were used to test to see if what would happen if the "away" player used a "small" goalkeeper.

Simon Hutchinson 2 v Wayne Smith 2 (HT 1-2)

Simon used his SportsFigure goalkeeper, Wayne used his metal goalkeeper.

Simon took the lead in the ninth minute with a shot from the right.  Wayne equalized a minute later with a chip that went into the goal at the far post, and took the lead with just two minutes remaining in the first half with a low shot that went in at the far post.

Simon scored the only goal of the second half in the twelfth minute from a long shot to tie the game.

"Simon's new offensive strategy is most effective," Wayne observed after the game.  "I don't remember Simon scoring two goals on me.  It makes the game a lot more fun.  Simon's second goal chipped my horizontal goalkeeper, he did it nicely."

Wayne Smith 5 v Simon Hutchinson 0 (HT 3-0)

Wayne was the "home" player and used his metal goalkeeper, Simon was the "away" player and used a "small" goalkeeper.

Wayne dominant his "home" leg scoring three goals in the first half, in the fifth, ninth and thirteenth minutes, as Simon was unable to prevent a goal with the "small" goalkeeper.

In the ninth minute of the second half Simon's attempts to save a shot resulted in an own goal when he scooped the ball into his own goal with back of the goalkeeper.  Wayne complete the rout with a goal with just one and half minute remaining.

Simon Hutchinson 2 v Wayne Smith 4 (HT 2-2)

In the return leg Simon was the "home" player and used his SportsFigure goalkeeper, Wayne was the "away" player and used a "small" goalkeeper.

Simon had a lot to do to overcome a 0-5 deficit in the second leg.  He started brightly with a goal in just 30 seconds, only for Wayne to equalize a minute later.  In the ninth minute Simon took the lead again.  Wayne equalized with just 40 seconds left in the first half.  This left Simon the tall order of having to score six goals in the second half to win.

Alas, it was not to be as Wayne scored the only two games in the second half in the fifth and twelfth minutes to win the tie with an aggregate score of 9-2.

"I have never played in such high scoring games with Simon before," Wayne commented after the second leg.  "If he goes through with this the league is going to be way more challenging than the last one [Season 6].

"In the four game we have played since he changed his strategy he has tied me twice.  Which is a substational improvement.  He has scored two goals twice, which is quiet remarkable."

Friday January 9

Wayne Smith 1 v Simon Hutchinson (HT 1-0)

Wayne played through gritted teeth, and almost cried out in pain when he missed a flick or a shot at goal.  In reality he was playing under the effects of a kidney stone and recurring pain from a surgery he had undergone two years before.

The only goal of the game came towards the end of the first half.

"It was remarkably tight considering how attack minded we were," Wayne told us after the game.  "Both of us had five players up front, but did not get a good shot at goal due to the other making defensive flicks at the right time."

Simon Hutchinson 3 v Munir Merchant 0 (HT 3-0)

Three goals in the first half gave Simon what was an easy victory over Munir.

"The first half sucked," Munir lamented, "it was not memorable for me.  I felt sluggish.  I felt I did not react well to shots [at goal].  I did not feel I has a bad touch."

"Before the game I proposed that this game not be the league game we have to play," Simon explained, "leaving it to the last game of Season 6 as it will probably settle who will finish in third place [in the Champions play off group].  I now regret that decision as this win would have put me a great place for third place and would have left Munir needing to beat Steve Tucker in both of their games."

Simon Hutchinson 0 v Wayne Smith 0

"Lots of movement, but not many shots," was Munir comment after he had watched the game.

"I thought it was pretty poor play," was Wayne's comment, "with so many figures in offense but not many shots."

"Both of us took shots that the other had to save," Simon countered, "many attacks broke down due to superb blocking defensive flicks."

Friday January 16

Adam Carlson 1 v Kevin Nieman 1 (HT 0-1)

"It was not my best game," Adam explained, "Kevin and I have not played in a while so it was OK."

"Bother," was Kevin's response.

"Adam earned his goal," he added much later.

Simon Hutchinson 1 v Dominic Hutchinson 0 (HT 1-0)

"For it being my first game in three months I did a lot better than I expected," was Dominic's comment about the game.

"He did play well considering the length of time it has been since his last game," his father Simon explained.  "He just needs to practice his flicking some more."

Adam Carlson 1 v Dominic Hutchinson 1 (HT 0-1)

Dominic took the lead early in the first half. Adam equalized with just 48 seconds left after Dominic made a defensive blunder to open a gap in his defense through with Adam could flick the ball and shoot.

Wayne Smith 3 v Kevin Nieman 0 (HT 2-0)

"All Wayne on offense, I really did not have any offense to speak of," Kevin lamented.

Wayne was in total agreement with "What he said."

Wayne Smith 3 v Munir Merchant 0 (HT 1-0)

"A pretty typical game with Wayne," Munir said philosophically. "I played pretty well in the first half.  I am disappointed with the lack of scoring opportunities with throwing people up in offense."

Simon Hutchinson 1 v Adam Carlson 0 (HT 0-0)

Simon's goal was from a shot early in the second half.  It came from the right and took Adam so much by surprise that he did not have his hand on his goalkeeper.

"I thought I played pretty well for not having played for a few weeks," Adam told us.  "But Simon had good defense and I could not beat that."

"Revenge is mine!" exclaimed Simon with a wry smile in his face.  "The last time we played we tied 1-1.  I warned Adam before this game we would just have to keep playing until I beat him.  At least I did it without extra time and shoot out."
