Fri Sep 12, 08: Steve Tucker 2 v Kevin Nieman 0

Report by Wayne Smith

Steve was “home” and chose to play on the Mawra pitch. Steve and Kevin were having a tough time getting much of an attack for the first 10 minutes. By that time each side had only one shot and a save. That’s where the evenness ended. With 4 minutes left in the 1st half Steve came down the middle of the pitch, pushed the ball to the right of the defensive line and shot the ball into the far corner of the goal for a 1:0 lead. Steve added to the lead with less than a minute left in the half with a shot from the left wing just outside the penalty area. Steve held on for the win as the second half saw no scoring despite more shots than the first half.

Comments:

Kevin: For playing for the first time in three weeks it is expected to have no offense. In the beginning I was happy with my defensive flicks, but after a while they were getting worse. Steve is so good and quick on counter attacks that it is hard to make good defensive flicks against him.

Steve: I’m happy with a win considering that it was the first time I ever used this team and these bases.

Wayne: Steve adjusted brilliantly to the Rex C’s as they were sticking rather badly. That would have totally psyched me out, but it barely fazed him. I felt that Kevin would have been way better off forming his defensive line once he lost the ball rather than chasing the ball around midfield. This left a number of large holes in his defense.

Fri Sep 12, 08: Wayne Smith 3 v Kevin Nieman 1

Report by Wayne Smith

Kevin’s first day of league games consisted of two games against the two favorites-not an easy chore. Wayne started the scoring early, with a goal from the right side, but the lead was short lived. Kevin countered with the goal of the game. Just two minutes after Wayne’s goal Kevin got the ball around Wayne’s line, on the left wing, waited for Wayne to reach to make a defensive flick, then shot the ball hard off the far post and in. The technique of waiting for the defender to shoot because he’s distracted and won’t be able to make a save almost paid off for Wayne about six minutes later. Instead of scoring, though, Kevin got his hand in the way of Wayne’s shot. The resulted in the first penalty of the season. Taking penalties isn’t the best part of Wayne’s game, and in fact, he rarely makes penalties. It was no surprise than Wayne missed the penalty. He hit the left post. He did retain possession and managed to score just about 80 seconds later. Before half time Kevin nearly tied the game with a carom shot which Wayne’s keeper managed to parry. They went in at half time Werder up 2:1. Kevin’s keeper kept the game close in the second half with 4 saves. The last goal of the game was Werder’s third and came with 2:13 left in the game.

Comments:

Kevin: Lots of action.  I liked my goal.  I waited for Wayne to reach for a defensive to shoot.  Aside from that I had a lot of desperation defense and desperation offence.  I’ll be happy when this road trip is over.

Wayne: Kevin’s keeper was awesome! I had a shot with 7 minutes left and while he was holding his keeper he reaching for a defensive flick and not watching me. When I shot Kevin moved his keeper to the middle of the goal and made a great save, without even watching-he just sensed that the keeper should be in the middle of the goal! He had 7 saves for the game-a Season 6 record!

Fri Sep 12, 08: Steve Tucker 1 v Wayne Smith 3

Report by Wayne Smith

In an attempt to get his players to glide better, Steve Tucker chose to play on the lower but faster “fast pitch.” While it did improve things, Steve managed only a single shot all game. Even though it was a goal, the overall result could have been better for the home team.

Steve kicked off to start the game, but the first chance went to Wayne. He got a shot and forced a corner with 4:10 gone in the game. Less than two minutes later Wayne was on the board. Wayne continued with pressure and forced a corner and scored again within another three minutes. Up 0:2 Wayne continued with pressure, but it was Steve who was next to score. With 1:54 left in the half Steve scored and got back into the game.

Wayne kicked off to start the second half and forced a save from Steve in just 30 seconds. Wayne continued the pressure and scored with 11:57 remaining in the game-a ripper from a steep angle on the right wing, scored with a figure flicked parallel to the touch line from about 12” from the ball. Wayne continued with pressure limiting Steve’s best plays to defense. At one point Wayne held the ball over a minute and dribbled and passed the ball in front of Steve’s shooting line but could find no hole. Finally Wayne found a tiny slot, pushed the ball through but could only manage a meager shot that rolled well wide. The game ended with Wayne about to take a corner.

Comments:

Steve: A typical game against Wayne.

Wayne: That was succinct!

It is nice to leave the Bernabeu (Steve is using Real Madrid team) up 3:1. At times Steve had fantastic defense, but when I countered he seemed rushed. My long flick goal was really lucky and I don’t think that Steve thought I was going to shoot on that one.

A game of few chances as Dominic defended in numbers and stopped Jason from getting into the shooting zone.  At the other end Dominic had no figures forward to pass to when he had possession.

Fri Sep 19, 08: Jason Mitchell 0 v Kevin Nieman 2

Both players agreed than Jason had had the majority of possession, but he was unable to turn it into goals.  In the fourth minute Kevin stranded his goalkeeper, but Jason was unable to turn possession into a shot at goal.  It was not Jason's game as just a minute later his shot stopped with the ball two thirds over the goal line.  In the seventh minute he struck Kevin's goalpost.  It was almost against the run of play near the end of the first half Kevin scored with a hard shot from the center of the shooting zone.

Jason continued to dominate the first ten minutes of the second half.  His first shot went wide in the fifth minute, and Kevin saved another in the seventh minute.  In the last six minutes Kevin came to the fore scoring his second goal, from a shot from a bad angle that went under the goalkeeper's arm, forced another save, and two corners in the dying minutes.

Jason: I think I'll go home.

Wayne: Both goals were counters [attacks].  In both cases Jason had too few players back.

Fri Sep 19, 08: Simon Hutchinson 1 v Steve Tucker 4

Simon's goalkeeping deserted him in this game as he failed to save any of the shots on goal.  It started badly when he dragged the ball into his goal in the 18th second and continued badly from then onwards.  At the end of the game both players realized that neither of them had made a save, or that there had been a corner.

Comments:

Steve: I felt my team did very well against strong opposition.  The highlight of my game was the touch of my shooting, it was on today.

Simon: I am very disappointed in conceding the first goal.  From then onwards my goalkeeping stunk, I did not save a shot.  On a normal day I would have saved at least one [of Steve's shots].  I had lots of possession, but could not push the ball forward.

Wayne: Both goals were counters [attacks].  In both cases Jason had too few players back.

Fri Sep 19, 08: Wayne Smith 3 v Jason Mitchell 0

Wayne's offense was on "fire" in the first half.  He scored his first goal within two minutes of the start of the game, and doubled his lead within five minutes.  In the fifth and sixth minutes he tried long shot attempts, the first went wide for a goal kick.  He scored his third in the tenth minutes with a "slow roller" from the left.  With less than a minute left in the first half he stranded his goalkeeper, but Jason was unable to turn that opportunity into a goal.

In the second half he "pulled back" and this gave the opportunity for Jason to make five shots, but it was not until the 11th minute that Wayne had to make a save.

Fri Sep 19, 08: Dominic Hutchinson 0 v Steve Tucker 2

Dominic's defense in numbers made it harder for Steve than he had had it playing the elder Hutchinson.  Despite conceding a goal in either half Dominic was still happy to have lost by a smaller margin that his father had.

Fri Sep 19, 08: Simon Hutchinson 0 v Wayne Smith 2

The feeling was it was not Simon's night when he stranded his goalkeeper in the fifth minute.  Fortunately for him Wayne was not able to capitalize on his mistake.  Wayne first goal was a strike into the top right of the goal, and the first half ended with the score at 1-0.

In the fifth minute of the second half Simon made an excellent save to deny Wayne a second goal.  But his efforts to deny Wayne a second were crushed in the twelfth minute when Wayne shot over the goalkeeper at close range into the top left corner.

Jason: Another disappointing game.  I thought it should have been a draw.  It was exactly what your [Dominic's] T shirt says "I got out of bed for this".
