Why the long name?

Ken Kutaragi is considered "the father of the Sony PlayStation".  During his time as CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment he had the vision for the PlayStation console, and was in charge of the project to develop it.  The name "PlayStation" was chosen to be the opposite of "workstation".  The console was launched in December 1994 to great acclaim, and was the market leader in its field for the eleven years of its production life.

Ken was born on August 8, 1950, in Tokyo, Japan.  And this tournament is to celebrate his birthday, as without his vision video gaming would not be what it is today.

Report

This event was not a tournament.  It was an opportunity for all the members of the Southern California Subbuteo Club to play our two Swiss visitors, Thomas and Trisha Baumeler who play for the Subbuteo Players Aargau Süd, Switzerland.

In FISTF's July 2009 rankings Thomas was ranked as the 147th (out of 355) best Veteran player in the world.  None of the SCSC players were ranked by FISTF.  Twelve year old Trisha is one of the top U15 women players from Switzerland.

Trisha Baumeler 1 v Dominic Hutchinson 0
Dominic:  I feel that that was a good game.  She has good flicking.  I had seven shots on goal.  All missed [sigh], need to work on shooting.

Thomas Baumeler 1 v Wayne Smith 1
Wayne:  I feel fortunate to finish the game 1-1.

Thomas Baumeler 2 v Simon Hutchinson 0
Simon:  Thomas's flicking is a lot better and accurate than mine.  His goals came from the two times I left large gaps in my defensive line, a bit like Swiss cheese.  I had three or four shots that Thomas had to save.  A bit disappointed to have lost, but the best man won.

Kevin Nieman 0 v Steve Tucker 0
Kevin:  For not playing in a month I felt comfortable.  Steve seemed to dominate offense in the first half.  Two key saves in the second half kept my game alive.  My only real chance was a rapid advance down the right and a shot before Steve had his hand on his keeper.  It was a nice opening match.
Steve:  I worked hard on offense in both halves and had many attempts on goal.  The balance of the game was definitely on my side.

Wayne Smith 2 v Trisha Baumeler 0

Wayne Smith 4 v Dominic Hutchinson 0
Dominic called the mercy rule when Wayne scored his fourth goal with six minutes remaining in the second half.

Thomas Baumeler 3 v Steve Tucker 0
Steve:  I enjoyed the game against "T", he plays very well as I expected.  I did get some chances to score, so at least I was in the game for a while.  Congratulations to him.

Trisha Baumeler 1 v Kevin Nieman 0
Kevin:  Trisha has incredible touch, blocked my figures very well, and held the ball for very long stretches.  Her goal came within the first five minutes from her right.  She penetrated my defense rather well.  Even though I was beaten, I enjoyed this match very much.  I was tested often, had a few chances, Trisha was the deserved victor.  Well done!

Steve Tucker 2 v Trisha Baumeler 0
Steve:  A fun game.  Trisha is a very good player.  It took quick goals to score on here, and that was the difference.  The second [goal] was when her defense was in a shambles.
Trisha:  Steve is very fast.

Thomas Baumeler 4 v Kevin Nieman 0
Kevin:  Thomas definitely had my number and I felt my defense prevented a higher score.  I had at least four saves, and my offense was failing me.  It was fun, though to watch Thomas play as he is my first adult competitor from Europe.  Maybe I can improve in time for his next trip out here.

Wayne Smith 4 v Simon Hutchinson 0
Wayne:  Simon has played a lot better than this.  He was better on Friday.  It must be an off day.

Trisha Baumeler 2 v Simon Hutchinson 1
Simon:  I took an early lead and felt I had most of the play in the first half.  In the second she pressed, and my offense seem to melt away like cheap Swiss chocolate.  She equalized with a ramp shot that struck my defender and dropped down, steeply, behind my goalkeeper.  After the goal she pressed and had a lot of play just outside my shooting zone.  The second goal came with just 50 seconds left.  She pushed the ball through a gap in my defense.  She had two figures she could use, and I blocked one.  She touched up with the other, and scored with a chip shot over the keeper.  I tried in the last few seconds but could not penetrate her massed defensive line.  When the bizzer sounded she danced in celebration.
Trisha:  It was crazy!

Thomas's comments from the Subbuteo Players Aargau Süd's website.
