Report

After two weeks of Season 6 league the players returned to the more relaxed play of the Maricopa Cup.

While this is only the third time David Jensen has taken part in a Southern California Subbuteo Club event he is proving a tough opponent, finishing the day with one victory and one draw.

Munir Merchant's third game of the day, a loss to Kevin Nieman, was his one hundredth game.  He has reached this milestone in just eight months, far quicker than anyone has done to date.

David Jensen 1 Munir Merchant 1 (HT 0-1)
Munir took the lead in the sixth minute of the first half.  David equalized with less that twenty seconds left in the second half.

Munir:  "Good game.  Not a lot of chances.  David had the bulk of possession.  My goal came on a quick beak.  Ground ball into the right side."

David:  "Good game too.  Too many giveaways, too many turners [turnovers].  I was working hard for a shot and was surprised to score from such a hard angle."

Wayne Smith 3 Simon Hutchinson (HT 2-0)
Wayne kicked off, and gave up the ball almost immediately.  Simon turned over possession after four flicks.  Wayne had possession for the next 5:30 before managing to make a shot, which was saved.  He took the lead in the sixth minute, and doubled it in the eighth.  After the second goal the game became more even.  Simon did have several shots at goal forcing Wayne to make two saves he described as "nice".  In the second half Wayne continued to press and it led to a third goal in the eleventh minute.

Wayne:  "For the first eight minutes I played as well as I have ever.  For once I did not lose patience, I just held back and had shots."

David Jensen 1 Kevin Nieman 0 (HT 0-0)
Right from the start Kevin was on the offense.  He would shoot and David's goalkeeper would save, or the shots went wide.  "Story of my day," was how Kevin described it.

David snatched the winner midway through the second half from a counter attack.  He rapidly pushed the ball over the shooting line, and quickly shot the ball into the goal appearing to take Kevin by surprise.

Wayne Smith 4 Munir Merchant 0 (HT 3-0)
Mercy rule victory was achieved in the seventh minute of the second half.

Wayne: "I was on for it again.  I have had no more that one 4-0 win against Munir because of his defense.  It is usually so good.  This time I had three goals in the first eight minutes."

Munir:  "I was out of this before it started.  I think I was 2-0 down before four minutes.  That's the way it goes.  I felt like I didn't play badly, Wayne was just on."

Simon Hutchinson 0 Kevin Nieman 0
Simon:  "One of the most open games we have played.  It was not the usual defensive stalemate.  Lots of flowing midfield play and fast passes.  We both had chances but out shooting let us down."

Kevin:  "I felt Simon had the edge on offensive chances.  I did not feel my chances had a lot of quality to them."

Simon Hutchinson 2 David Jensen 0 (HT 2-0)
Simon scored two goals in the first seven minutes of the first half.

Simon Hutchinson 0 Munir Merchant 0
The game was pretty much all Simon on the attack, but he could not score.  Munir made four saves with his goalkeeper to keep the game scoreless.

Wayne Smith 4  Kevin Nieman 0 (HT 3-0)
Mercy rule victory was achieved with just one minute gone in the second half.  The players continued to play even though the score would be recorded as 4-0.  By the end of the game Wayne had scored six goals.

Munir Merchant 1 David Jensen 0 (HT 0-0)
Both players described the game as "balanced" and "tight" with strong defenses.  Munir scored the only goal five minutes into the second half.

Wayne Smith 3 Simon Hutchinson 1 (HT 2-0)
After two early goals in the first half the game "cooled off".  Simon pulled a goal back midway through the second half with a ramp shot off a defender that flew over Wayne's goalkeeper and dropped down into the goal.  Simon's defense and goalkeeping kept Wayne at bay until there was less than two minutes left in the second half, when he scored his third goal.

Munir Merchant 0 Kevin Nieman 0
Munir:  "Pretty even game this time.  Unlike the first debacle."

Kevin:  "Both players failed to get any quality chances."

Munir:  "The shots that came out here were not quality."

Kevin: "Very much a defensive struggle."

Wayne Smith 2 David Jensen 0
Wayne:  "David's defense was really good.  Really hard to get a hole [through David's defense] and a shot in."

David: "I kept turning it [the ball] over at the shooting line."

Wayne Smith 3 Kevin Nieman 0 (HT 2-0)
Wayne:  "The least intensive game I have played in a while."

Kevin (laughing):  "Imagine the worse sporting league's worse team and mine played worse."
