Report

Group A

Wayne Smith, Dominic Hutchinson, Kevin Nieman, Simon Hutchinson, Sean Daly

Wayne scored two quick goals in the first half against Dominic. Dominic’s defense was so good that it prevent Wayne from getting another shot on goal for 18 minutes. During that time Dominic did score, but the goal was disallowed as there was an offside figure. Two late goals from Wayne rounded off the scoring for this game.

Kevin scored an early goal against Simon, and then withstood a second half where Simon had almost all of the possession and shots.

Kevin had most of the shots on goal in his game against Sean in the first half. In the second half Sean's defense came more into the game and cut down on the number of opportunities for his opponent, leaving the game to end goalless.

Dominic snatched an early goal in the first half against his father, Simon, only for Simon to equalize before half time. Dominic took the lead again in the second half with a long flick through a narrow gap between two defenders to blast the ball into Simon’s goal. Midway through the second half Simon equalized, and for the remainder of the game Simon attacked at will only to be frustrated by Dominic’s defensive flicks and goalkeeping.

Simon took the lead against Sean in the second minute, and Sean equalized just before half time. In the second half Simon had all of the offense and shots scoring three more goals for his first win of the day.

Wayne felt lucky for the first half of his game with Kevin to end goalless. Kevin still made it tough for Wayne in the second half, but after Wayne’s first goal all of the bounces and rolls went his way for him to score twice more.

A goal in either half against Sean gave the younger Hutchinson, Dominic, his first win. Sean did get some possession and shots but Dominic’s goalkeeping was good enough to prevent him from scoring.

Simon played with a massed defense to frustrate Wayne. He did get three shots at Wayne’s goal, one struck the post and the other Wayne had to save. At the other end three "quality" saves kept Wayne goalless for the only time in this tournament.

The first half of Dominic’s and Kevin’s game was described as chaotic with lots of missed and errant flicks. Despite this Kevin took the lead toward the beginning of the first half, and scored two more in a better second half.

Sean had to leave before the end of group play, therefore, his remaining game against Wayne was awarded as a win to Wayne.

Wayne finished in first place and received a bye to the Championship semi finals.  Kevin and Simon qualified to the Championship quarter finals.  Dominic went to the Missions Trophy semi final.

Group B

Steve Tucker, Adam Carlson, Jason Mitchell, David Jensen, Edward Nathan

Steve speedy play allowed him to take the lead, in the second minute, against Adam. Only a string of great saves by Adam’s goalkeeper stopped Steve from adding to his score.

David and Jason fought out a goalless draw that Jason was left feeling he should have “nicked” it at the end.

David struck in the first two minutes against Adam, and then slowed down the pace of the game to frustrate his opponent and stop Adam from getting any shots at goal.

Jason scored the only goal of his game against Edward in the sixth minute.

Jason took Steve by surprise scoring in the sixth minute of the first half. After his goal Jason moved all of his figures into defense and withstood all of Steve attacks, limiting Steve to only one shot at goal for the rest of the game.

Edward took the lead in the second half of his game with David, scoring in the fifth minute of the second half. With two minutes left David forced a corner and scored for the game to end a tie.

Edward was beaten by a single goal by Jason, and then bounced back to score five goals against Adam.

Adam was also beaten by one goal by David. After his unexpected defeat Steve came back to beat David.

Before the last round of games Jason had to beat Adam, who had lost his three games, to finish top of the group. Steve had to beat Edward and hope that Adam would not lose. Adam and Jason played out a game of very few chances, only four shots were taken, that ended goalless. Steve beat Edward, and was relieved to finish in first place.

Steve received a bye to the Championship semi finals.  Jason and David went through to the Championship quarter finals.  Adam went to the Mission Trophy semi finals.  Edward received a bye to the Mission Trophy final as Sean Daly withdrew from the competition.

Missions Trophy semi final

Dominic Hutchinson 2 Adam Carlson 1 (HT 2-0)
Dominic took the lead early and doubled it midway through the first half.  Adam had more offense in the second half, which was played more in Dominic's half, and was reward with a consolation goal with just 43 seconds remaining in the game.

Edward Nathan bye to final
Edward received a bye to the final as Sean Daly withdrew from the competition.

California State Championship quarter finals

Simon Hutchinson 0 Jason Mitchell 0 (after extra time, shoot out 2-1)
The defenses dominated this game as both players struggled to break through their opponent's massed defense to get a shot at goal.  Simon did not have to make a save during the game, Jason was forced to make three.  Simon did score early in the first half, but the goal was ruled out by the referee, Wayne.  He ruled that Simon had flicked the same figure four times, a charge Simon strongly denied.  The "golden goal" extra time was a bit more open, but both players seems more worried about conceding a goal than scoring one.  As the game remained tied at the end of extra time this game was decided by a shoot out.

Shots 1 2 3 4 5 Score
Simon crossbar crossbar over goal goal 2
Jason goal save over save save 1

Jason:  A shoot out is a lottery.  It is the first time I have played in a shoot out.  I am proud that I have not conceded a goal today.

Simon:  It was a very defensive performance by both of us.  I am very disappointed that my goal was disallowed as I am sure it was only three flicks.

Kevin Nieman 0 David Jensen 0 (after extra time, shoot out 1-0)
Each player had an equal number of opportunities in this back and forth game, but none were "concrete".  As the game was goalless at the end of extra time it was decided by a shoot out.  It was still goalless after the first five shoot out shots and went to "sudden death".  Kevin scored with the six shot and saved David's shot to win the game.

Shots 1 2 3 4 5 6 Score
Kevin save save crossbar post save goal 1
David over save save wide over save 0

Kevin:  This was the most even game I have played today.

David:  It was back and forth, a good game.

Missions Trophy final

Edward Nathan 2 Dominic Hutchinson 0 (HT 1-0)
Edward decided to throw caution to the wind in this game and push forward to attack in numbers.  This did not throw Dominic as he defended in numbers.  Whenever Dominic won the ball he would make a long pass upfield towards a lone attacker on Edward's shooting line.  Edward scored his first goal midway through the first half with a slow shot to the back post.  His second came midway through the second half having "rotated" [?] Dominic's defense and made a gap in the center through which Edward could attack.

Edward:  I think Dominic has improved a lot since I last played him.  The only thing he needs is a bit more patience.

Dominic:  I hate Edward's bases.  His figures rolled around and blocked mine all the time.

California State Championship semi finals

Kevin Nieman 1 Steve Tucker 1 (HT 1-1, after extra time, shoot out 3-1)
Kevin scored in the first five minutes of the game, and Steve equalized two or three minutes later.  For the remainder of the game Steve was on the attack and Kevin's defense hung on as he tried his hardest to stop giving Steve any opportunities for shots at goal.  As the game was tied at the end of extra time it was decided by a shoot out.  Kevin scored with his first three shots and saved three of Steve's to win the shoot out in the fourth shot.

Shots 1 2 3 4 5 Score
Kevin goal goal goal save   3
Steve save save goal save   1

Wayne Smith 1 Simon Hutchinson 0 (HT 0-0)
Simon tried to repeat the tactics that had allowed him to tie with Wayne in the group stage.  His massed defense and careful play increasing frustrated Wayne's offense as the game went on.  Then with only two minutes left a bad defensive flick by Simon left a gap in his defense that Wayne could push the ball through to shoot and score the only goal of the game.

Wayne:  It took me 58 minutes to score against Simon.

Simon:  I was hanging on to try and keep the game goalless and then beat him in a shoot out, as I have done in practice ones before.  I am disappointed in myself to have made such a poor defensive flick to give him the opening to score through.

Sierras final (U19)

Adam Carlson 1 Dominic Hutchinson 0 (HT 1-0)
Referee Simon Hutchinson said after the game it was the best game he had seen these two play.  The game was very fluid with lots of offense and shots.  Adam was gifted an opportunity by a defensive error by Dominic that left him with a clear shot at goal, that he took and scored.  For the rest of the game Dominic had most of the possession and offense, but he struggled to get into the final position to shoot as he would rush and make mistakes.

Adam:  It was a great game.  It was one of the best games I have seen Dominic and I play.  It was on and off the whole time.

California State Championship final

Wayne Smith 3 Kevin Nieman 0 (HT 1-0)
The first half was all Wayne on the attack.  Kevin made four saves with his goalkeeper's rod until, with only 13 second left in the first half, Wayne drove the ball into the roof of Kevin's goal.  Kevin's defense was not overwhelmed in the second half, but Wayne scored a second with a slow rolling shot that fooled Kevin's goalkeeper, and Wayne scored a third with eight minutes left.

Wayne:  Kevin played much tougher in the group stage than this time. In that game I was hanging on for dear lie.  In this one he did not nearly have the offense.

Kevin:  I has two shoot outs in a row, and I have played a lot of Subbuteo before this game.  I think there was a bit of fatigue, but don't take that as an excuse.  I am happy to be in my first final against him.  One of these days I will beat him.
